Word judging at the 2000 National Scrabble Championships in Providence, Rhode IslandPage

I've been playing Scrabble in local clubs and tournaments since 1982, am currently ranked 236th among North American tournament players and have usually been among the top 10 in the weekly Lexington, MA club standings (but I'm slipping lately). I don't play Scrabble on line. With three local clubs in my area I have more than enough opportunities to play in real life, and plenty of other ways to waste time on my computer.

My Scrabble ClockMy clock page is about the unique hand-crafted wood-housed electronic quartz analog game timers which I designed in 1995 for my own use, and built a few more of for sale to other Scrabble players. It also includes links to the most popular digital timers.

On March 1, 2006 the new Second Edition of the Official Tournament and ClubWord List (OWL2) took effect for club and tournament Scrabble games in North America. Here is a list of all the new 2 through 8 letter words formatted as a 6 page MS Word document suitable for printing.

LeXpert and Zyzzyva are both excellent free word list programs. If you'd rather program your own word lists, you can start with this complete list (updated 3-2-06) of all the North American Scrabble words.

I recently purchased my first PDA, a Palm Z22, and am finding it very useful for Scrabble, largely because its small size makes it very easy to keep handy for consultation at any time (usually in my shirt pocket). Significantly more compact than the now obsolete (OSPD3) SCR-226 Franklin Scrabble Companion, it's closer in size to the older (OSPD2) SCR-30 Franklin Official Scrabble Players Electronic Dictionary. For anagramming, pattern searches and challenge adjudications on the Palm, the program to use is LAMPWords. But LAMPWords doesn't include definitions, so for that I use another program, a dictionary reader called RoadLingua. I've prepared a OWL2 definitions file for RoadLingua, based on Zyzzyva's dictionary file, which you can find here.

To learn more about the North American tournament Scrabble scene, read the book, Word Freak by Stefan Fatsis.

I also love to play Clabbers and have built 2 boards for playing Nick Ballard's original Super-Scrabble. If you're interested in either of these variations, .
