Sybase announced its Cyberport Tenancy
11 July, 2002
The Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, Mr
Henry Tang, today (July 11) said that innovation and technology were powerful
drivers for the long-term growth of our economy.
"The Government is a facilitator and supporter in
driving innovation and technology. Our vision is to develop Hong Kong
into a centre of innovation and technology, thereby increasing the added
value, productivity and competitiveness of Hong Kong's manufacturing and
service industries," he said.
Welcoming Sybase's decision to move into Cyberport Phase
III in 2004, Mr Tang noted that Sybase had always been a staunch supporter
for Government's Digital 21 Strategy.
"I am pleased that Sybase has been a close IT partner
with the Government and will work together with us in creating a success
story for Cyberport. The commitment of this important software company
will help draw other companies to come to Cyberport,." Mr Tang said.
"Sybase signed a letter of intent in 1999 to become
an anchor tenant at Cyberport. I am pleased that Sybase now makes good
on its commitment and will move into one of the later phases of the Cyberport
which will be ready for occupation in 2004", he said.
"Sybase has cast a vote of confidence in the project
by signing up to become an anchor tenant at Phase III of the Cyberport
which will be completed 18 months later. This is a strategic company decision
on the part of this multinational company which has the personal support
of Sybase's Chairman, CEO & President, Mr John Chen. Mr Chen is confident
that Cyberport provides an excellent facility for IT companies and professionals.
Sybase believes that Cyberport will meet its business needs and will help
the company explore new areas of IT development", Mr Tang said.
The Cyberport is one of the infrastructures Hong Kong
is investing to promote innovation and technology. Other components in
the government's innovation and technology programmes included the provision
of funding and support; investment in applied research and development
activities; and nurturing of talent.
