Hong Kong Cyberport's Digital Media Centre Opens with a Bang Regional hub for Digital Content Creation destined to nurture a new generation of Asia's own multimedia talent - 29/03/2004

The Digital Media Centre (DMC), a business unit of the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited (HKCMCL), today opened its doors to the world at the Cyberport presided by guests of honour Mr. John C Tsang JP, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology; Mr. Daniel Lai JP, Director of the Board, HKCMCL; and host Mr. Nicholas Yang, CEO, HKCMCL.

Funded by Cyberport and the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF), DMC provides support to content developers, multimedia professionals, and anyone interested in being a part of the creative digital universe. Small and medium enterprises in the digital media industry are expected to benefit especially from the facilities and expertise at the DMC, including equipment available to rent for graphics rendering, animation, motion capture, high definition video, and much more.

"Our local talents have won, and many more have been nominated for, many international awards in film, video and television productions. The capability of our industry in producing innovative and high quality digital contents is well proven." said Mr. John Tsang.

"The Opening of the DMC marks the first and foremost step taken by the Government to provide the necessary infrastructure in building up a critical mass of digital entertainment companies here, an important technological development in Hong Kong," he said.

"DMC provides multimedia content creators with not only high-end production facilities at affordable prices, but also the much needed technical support by leading experts in the field. This should help address one of the major problems faced by the industry, in particular the small and medium sized enterprises and the freelancers, who could ill-afford the initial capital investment for these expensive hardware."

"Today creative contents have found viable business models in music, education and entertainment, games, animation and advertising - we call these MEGAA. The Digital Media Centre will support the content development in MEGAA, and this project by Cyberport is the first of many great steps that we will take to make Hong Kong one of the world's finest in creative industry." said Nicholas Yang.

The DMC is divided into four key sections, including:
ĦE Multimedia Lab - Motion Capture, 3D scanning and multimedia workstations
ĦE HD Video Studio and Video Control Room - comprising Real Time Virtual Set, and HD Ready Studio with three HD cameras
ĦE Audio Suites - equipped with Dolby E and Dolby AC-3 equipment, digital mixing consoles and recording booths
ĦE Editing Suites - equipped with Avid HD DS Nitris and Adrenaline systems for complete postproduction including nonlinear video and audio editing

All facilities at the DMC are offered for rental to companies engaged in digital content creation. More information is available at dmc.cyberport.com.hk
