HKU's Cyberport Institute: Synergy with Industry Leaders Produces IT Talents

Today's seminar marks the support of HKU's Cyberport Institute (Cyber.i), as anchor tenant of the Cyberport, on the completion of the first two phases of the flagship project.

Cyber.i is HKU's endeavour to contribute to the Cyberport's objective in developing Hong Kong into a leading IT and digital city in the region. Set up in 2002 to nurture IT talents for the industry, the institute is due to be operational in Cyberport in fall this year.

Cyber.i is blessed with the support of industry leaders as Founding Industrial Partners. They are: Cisco Systems, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle and PCCW as Principal Corporate Partner. The synergy between academia and the industry results in state-of-the-art, market-oriented Cyber.i programmes through sponsorship of courseware and placement. Benefits to students are three-fold: access to top-of-the-market technologies curricula, scholarships, and placement opportunities that facilitate employment. This is in addition to enjoying Cyberport's advanced IT infrastructure and be in association with a high population of HK's IT elite. The industry would also welcome IT graduates trained in the latest in IT.

Cyberport Coordinator Mrs Betty Fung said "The Cyberport and the University of Hong Kong have been working closely on the establishment of a Cyberport Institute to provide market-driven IT programmes. I am glad that the initiative has received extensive support from the industry." She is echoed by HKU's Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Cyber.i Professor C F Lee who "realize the importance of the University working together with the IT and other related industries."

To add strength to the Cyber.i, the institute has appointed a panel of advisors to advise on development of the institute and help secure more support.

To acknowledge contribution of Cyber.i's partners, sponsors and advisors, souvenirs were presented by Professor Lee. Also acknowledged were three scholarship winners from graduates of Cyber.i's pilot Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology programme.

The seminar : " Learning in the New Age of IT - IT for All"

The seminar featured three speakers: Mr. Fred Sheu, Director, Solutions & Marketing, Enterprise Systems Group, Hewlett-Packard HK SAR Ltd, Mr. Peter Kwan, Executive Director, Great Asia Development Limited and Dr. Alfred Tan, Lecturer. They discussed about the benefits of IT to business and SME as well as the development of IT education in Hong Kong.
