Cyberport, Hong Kong WTIA & TRLabs of Canada
Sign Memoranda of Understanding (19 Jan 2004)
19 January, 2004
A Hong Kong SAR and Canada ICT Collaboration
Cyberport, WTIA & TRLabs Exchange Best Practices in Commercialisation
of Wireless and Digital Media Content Technologies - 19/01/2004
Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited (Cyberport)
and Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA) today signed
two respective Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with Telecommunications
Research Laboratories (TRLabs), Canada's largest research consortium (industry,
university, government) in information and communications technology (ICT),
in relation to ICT collaboration between Hong Kong and Canada for the
development of wireless applications and digital media content technologies.
Mr John C Tsang JP, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and
Technology of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
(HKSAR), The Honourable Ralph Klein, Premier of the Province of Alberta,
Canada and Mr Anthony Burger, Consul General of Canada in Hong Kong attended
as Guests of Honour witnessing the signing of the MOUs.
The MOUs, which are signed under the aegis of the MOU
on Co-operation in ICT between the two governments of HKSAR and Canada,
aim to strengthen the technology sharing and development for collaboration
in a series of complementary projects on wireless and digital media content
and game related development. This cooperative initiative includes collaboration
in applied research and development; exchange or secondment of business
and research personnel; prototype development and testing of novel technologies;
technology commercialisation and creation of business opportunities and
collaborating for the development and delivery of education and training.
One of Cyberport's missions is to support the development
of digital media and wireless applications. Scheduled to commence operations
in March this year, the Digital Media Centre (DMC) at Cyberport will be
equipped with a range of state-of-the-art facilities targeted to aid animators,
game developers, multimedia developers and digital films and video producers.
The DMC will provide critical technologies, hardware and software support
to foster growth of the industry.
"With the DMC, content creators need not worry about
the investment and outdating of the equipment and software, but concentrate
on generating creative contents such as music, edutainment, games, animation
and advertising, which the consumers need and want," said Mr Nicholas
Yang, Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company
Limited. Fascinated by the visions of Cyberport's tenants, Mr Yang went
on to say that: "I hope all the visionary people here will fully
exploit this collaboration by contributing their imaginations, innovations
and inspirations."
The collaboration between the TRLabs/NEWT and WTIA/HKWDC
via this MOU arrangement represents the vast opportunities in the areas
of technology transfer and business matching which immediately foster
the partnership and networking among the wireless industry in Hong Kong
and Canada.
Mr Duncan Lau, Chairman of the Hong Kong Wireless Technology
Industry Association (WTIA) added: "Hong Kong Wireless Development
Centre (HKWDC) - a regional wireless development hub, mandate to attract
investment and talent in the region, is honoured to spot TRLabs/NEWT as
a major partner to achieve its mission not only in aligning with information
technology and communications directions of Hong Kong but also the immediate
benefits with the industries."
Dr Michael Leung, Vice-President, Development of TRLabs
gave his remarks and said: "This latest example of cooperation across
the Pacific is about two key aspects that are particularly relevant in
this modern age - the age of knowledge and information".
