03/12/04 - The Karate-Do club is still hanging in there. Our attendance was only met by a handful of students. School does come first. Spring quarter of 2004 will be even better! I look foward to the new karateka who will train with us, and willing to learn more about Goju-Ryu Karate-Do.
Next quarter will also by my last quarter being the club president for the Karate-Do Club. From summer quarter of 2001, the SCCC Karate-Do Club has been under the guidance of myself, and since then many karateka have come and gone. However, I will be on the look out for other karateka who are interested in the position of being the club presdient of the SCCC Karate-Do Club, to aid others who want to further their training in Goju-Ryu Karate-Do. I will still be around, only as an adviser, but I will also train that person (or people) the requirements to receive a 1st degree black belt in the Goju-Ryu Karate-Do system, under the Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai. Also, with a club president is also a support staff; what if the karate-do club president is not always there to lead classes, who will take his/her place? Wanted: a karateka who shows strong leadership skills, has a willingness to be trained, is motivated to lead classes, to meet with the right people at the beginning of every quarter to complete the paper work, and has a flexible schedule. If you know anyone who can be in this position, please e-mail me: [email protected].
Also, I am planning to take the position of the SCCC Karate-Do Club to the next level. As you know, there are numerous high schools around the area who do running start programs. Most of these students need P.E. credit. I propose, that in conjunction with the Seattle High Schools, and SCCC, that there can be a program, where 9 through 12 graders in high school, can recieve instruction in Goju-Ryu Karate-Do, with the use of the SCCC Student Activites Center. We all know what it feels like to have the need to belong in a group, to be involved in something physical and challenging, as well as to help us to be motivated and to have fun in life. What better way to have Karate-Do taught in the Seattle High School system, with the SCCC SAC as it's base of operations. It will probably take some time, and some planning, but it can happen. This is just an idea that I had, and maybe, someday, I can pull it off.
Well, that's enough from me. Remember to keep training in karate-do, and also, to remember that karate-do does not stop in the dojo. - Sensei Carlos Aviado.
01/13/04 - Hello everyone!!! Welocme to another quarter at SCCC! Is everybody ready to go to karate-do club this winter quarter! I sure am. This quarter, Karate-Do Club will start January 13th of 2004 (01/13/04). Also, the Aikido club taught by Sensei Jung Ming Poon starts the same time, but students have the choice to choose either the Karate Club or Aikido Club. However, the Karate Club has exclusive rights to the Martial Arts students who take PEC-104, PEC-105, and PEC-106. So if anybody from those classes misses a class, they have to make it up at the Karate Club. Until then, see ya later!
12/03/03 - To all karatedo club members, another successful quarter of karatedo club over with, another year of karatedo club beginning. We have accomplished so much this quarter. We have 2 new experienced sempai for the karatedo club, and now the karatedo club will have an Aikido Club set for next quarter taught by Sensei Jung Ming Poon. The karatedo club is off to a great start. Next Quarter is Winter Quarter 2004, that means new club members, new advanced club members, and also a new karate tournament season. Be prepared, for next quarter many challenges will come, and wait to be faced. Until then, keep training and train hard.
09/29/03 - Hello everyone!!! Welocme to another quarter at SCCC! Is everybody ready to go to karate-do club this fall! I sure am. This quarter, Karate-Do Club will start October 21st of 2003 (10/21/03). The reason is that the Sensei of Karate-Do Club will be deployed to Ft. Bliss, Texas. Expect your Sensei back October the 19th of 2003 (10/19/03). Until then, train hard and practice.
This year's focus will be on leadership and appreciation. First and foremost, the leadership aspect of karate-do. As your club sensei, it is my duty to teach and drill the basics (kihon), forms (kata), and self-defense (goshin jitsu) aspects of karate-do. It is also my duty to teach and instill upon you leadership. That is why, I have chosen most of the students who regularly attend karate-do club to become leaders themselves. That means that you have to more than just come, you have to become involved, you always have to know what to do, as well as display a committed effort to the club. I welcome those who will display this model in the club. Awards for dojo appreciation for this year will be given out to the following people:
Shihan Boyd Gittins
These are the people we will give appreciation awards to in light of their efforts to make the SCCC karate-do club happen. That will be all for now, enjoy the quarter, and see you the 21st of October!
06/16/03 - Congratulations to those SCCC karate club members who competed June 14th, 2003 at the Shawn Denton Memorial Friendship Tournament. Everyone who competed either won their divison or placed. He placed 2nd in Men's 18-34 Advanced Under Black Belt Kata, 1st in Men's 18-34 Advanced Under Black Belt Sparring, and won the Grand Championship Trophy in the Advanced Adult's Under Blackbelt Championship for Sparring.
04/18/03 - Hello everyone! The SCCC Karate-Do Club has finally kick off another quarter successfully, with over ten students starting in class! The Karate Club has been going strong for 2 years, thanks to the help of its dedicated students and teachers. Congratulations to Ilan Bloom, Jason Cheney, and Shawna Clark for earning their green belt rank. Congratulations to Alexis Crane earning her 3rd stripe, yon-kyu rank. May these individuals continue to train hard and well. I look forward to training with each and everyone of you this Spring 2003 quarter. May you all train hard and do your best in Karatedo Club. Also, a new page called the SCCC Karate-Do Club News Archive has just been formed, that way, future and present club members can read about all the things that have happened in the past and what this club has acheived.
01/09/03 - Welcome to Winter Quarter everyone! 2003! 2K3! A new year, new quarter. I hope everyone had a pleasant holiday break. Well, first off, I just like to say that we have the SAC Multi-Purpose Room for Tuesdays and Thursdays. No more dealing with the basketballs... for awhile. I don't know how long we will have that space, but we are fourtunate to train in the same area the Martial Arts classes train in. Just to let everyone know, those who are not in the Martial Arts classes can apply for rank under me, Sensei Carlos Aviado. I have been given authorization under Sensei Boyd Gittins and the Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai to promote people up to the rank of shodan, first degree black belt. If you want to apply for rank, please speak with me, we can arrange a time where you can be promoted. Those who are in Mr. Gittins class for Martial Arts do not qualify for promotion. You would only be allowed to test if you are not taking his class. Classes start on Tuesday of next week, the 14th of January. The SCCC Karate-Do FAQ page has been updated, so please check it out. That is all for the time being, keep training hard, and see you on Tuesday.
10/11/02 - FINALLY!!! SENSEI CARLOS HAS UPDATED THIS PAGE!!! Welcome back to all members of the Karate-Do Club for the fall quarter 2002 at SCCC. Did you guys have a fun summer? What about a fun summer quarter? SCCC Karate-Do Club has gone through some tremendous changes. First off, we will become an offical dojo of the Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai. Second, ranks will become official, and a rank testing format will be in the making. Third, Sensei Carlos is a black belt, shodan ranking by the Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai. Also, Sensei Allen Jung Min Poon has come to assist us in the teachings of aikijujitsu. He too will be also learning Goju-Ryu through Mr. Gittins as well as Sensei Carlos. This is a new year of karate-do for the fall quarter, let's make it a safe and enjoyable one! Also, don't forget to train hard, stay focus, and never quit! - Sensei Carlos Aviado.
07/15/02 - Hello everyone... congratulations to those who attained rank for green belt this spring quarter. I extend my thanks to all of you who made the club possible this year. You wanted to practice more, you wanted to review what you have learned, and you looked to Sensei Gittins and Sempai Aviado for guidance. You have come far as karate-ka, how far are you willing to go?
Did everyone enjoy the party that was held June the 14th? I sure did! For those who did not make it, pictures will be posted. It was a good turn out. Elisa and Kellie must have told you, right? I want to say my Farewell to Kellie Jones, Goro Takami, Kanji Furahashi, and Ian Gauger-Wilkerson. Kellie Jones will be moving to Northern California, to pursue her studies and hopefully to continue Karate. Goro Takami will be going to Texas, and Kanji Furahashi will be transfering to the University of Washington this Fall. Ian Gauger-Wilkerson will be going to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, and go through Basic Combat Training. He will come back to the SCCC Karate club winter quarter of next year.
Congratulations to Sempai Carlos and Kellie Jones for competing in the Pacific Northwest AAU Taekwondo Open Tournement. Kellie Jones received 1st place in both Karate forms, adult male/female karate forms, and took 2nd place in point-sparring. Sempai Carlos took 1st place in Karate forms, and 1st place in point-sparring.
The seminar with Shihan Motoo Yamakura was a success, with Sempai Carlos, Elisa Jun, and Ilan Bloom showing up for the rigorous training.
I extend my thanks to all of you who made the Karate Club at SCCC a success, averaging 15 students per week. For those who have made the time, put in the effort, the reward is great. Remember to always practice hard, and always review what you have learned in karate. There will be informal gatherings during the summertime, and formal training will start back up again in the fall.
05/11/02 - Congratulations to Chester Yamat and Carlos Aviado for competing at the 8th Annual Shudokan Karate-Do Invitational Championship. Chester Yamat placed 1st in kumite in the Men's novice divison, and Carlos Aviado placed 2nd in Kata and 3rd in Kumite in the Men's advanced division.
May 17th, Shihan Motoo Yamakura is coming to Seattle. Anybody from the Karate-Do Club or Karate Class (PEC104, PEC105, PEC106) is invited to come train at Connolly Center at Seattle University. Black and Brown Belt Training is from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM - $15, and White and Green Belt training is from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM - $10.
04/08/02 - Hey everybody! How's it goin'? It's a new quarter, and you know what that means? That means we start up karate practice again! Isn't that wonderful? Anyway, flyers have been posted almost all over campus in the SCCC Student Activity Center, and within the halls of SCCC. Please don't ask me when classes are, or I will say nothing to you and point to those flyers.
Expect some new faces this quarter at the karate club. Remember if you see them, beat them to a pulp! No, just kidding! Just remember, for those of you in Mr. Gittins karate class, they are here to spend more time in learning karate, so please help them out as much as possible, I will need you help in teaching, I can't do this alone. Also, remember that Mr. Gittins is giving his full support to the club, so we have to support the students from his class to re-enforce their basics and kata, and if they want, they can spar with us.
To all students green belt and up, you will be learning alot in karate this quarter, so that means a full commitment to the class. However, if you just choose to train and like where you are at in karate, that's fine with me too. Some people will be learning two kata, instead of just one, so that's going to be alot of practicing in the club. If you can't do this, and school is important, then I suggest you just study, and practice and review over the kata you have learned so far in karate.
That's it for now, if I'm forgetting anything that I forgot to mention, I will e-mail you.
03/16/02 - Congratulations to Casey, Kevin, and Sempai Carlos for placing in the Pacific Northwest AAU Karate Championships. Casey got 1st in Kata, 4th in Kumite. Kevin got 2nd in kata and in kumite. Sempai Carlos got 1st in kata and in kumite. All of them qualify to the next level on competition, the AAU Karate Regionals. Practice for the Karate club begins again March 22nd.
02/10/02 - No updates to the page, but just remember to check out the our club FAQ. Sempai Carlos got his Ni-Kyu, getting closer to Shodan at Northwest Shito-Ryu Association.
01/19/02 - Updated our site, for class times and days. Also, check out the SCCC Karate FAQ, that way I don't have to answer any questions like "where do I get a karate uniform". I suggest you check it out.
01/08/02 - Hello everyone, practice has started today, thank you for all who showed up. There are a couple things I want to cover:
First off, training will not be in the SAC's multi-purpose room this quarter, it will be held up in the SAC's gym. Training today has been held up in the gym today.
Also, our club has the approval of Sensei Boyd Gittins of the Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai. He will recommend his students to go practice with us if they choose to. Since Mr. Gittins students will have full cooperation from us, we will not only practice the Shito-Ryu Cirriculum, but also the Goju-Ryu Cirriculum as well. This way Sensei Gittins' students will not only be comfortable practicing with us, but also excel in the Martial Arts class Sensei Gittins teaches.
And last, we will still continue to practice the basics. It is very important that the basics are practice in Karate, for the benefit in improving in Kata, as well as Kumite. We cannot promote anyone, the club's basis is to bring together traditional japanese/okinawan Karate-Do practitioners of any style, to train together. The Sempai-Kai will continue it's effort to teach karate-do, as well as to advance in Karate-Do. For those who want to join the Sempai-Kai, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Until next update, keep training and never quit! - Carlos Aviado.
11/19/01 - Tommorow will be the last day we will hold official club meetings at the SAC. Pleas e-mail Carlos for schedule for unofficial practices at the SAC. For any additional questions or comments, please e-mail Carlos
As fall quarter ends, and winter quarter begins, we will have new KarateKa join us in our training. In our successful outcome of KarateKa training together, we have put together a club that does not bound us by Karate style, not bound us by superior ability of one's skills, and not by people who know nothing of Karate. This club has been put together by people who want to know what karate is, to further their training in Karate, as well as keeping the traditon of Karate alive within themselves. Never have I seen such dedication in people who strived to reach beyond their limits and to be educated in the way. Never have I seen such diligence in training as well as resilience in one's Character. These qualities have been developed in Karate training, and such qualities will develop a physically and mentally strong person. Aside from qualities of determination and enduring hardship, one has learned other qualities such as discipline, courage, and sacrafice. The people who attend the club's meetings have given up the time to face their fears, and to keep a level mind when one feels like giving up.
To all Karate-Ka, who have proved be their best!
- Carlos Aviado, Sempai, 3rd Kyu Brown, TJKC, head instructor.
12/03/01 - Season's greetings to everyone! The last official day of trainingat the SAC for the Karate Club will end the Dec 7th of this week. The last day will be Dec 6th of this week, however this has not been confirmed yet. After Finals, Carlos will be available to hold unofficial training sessions at the SAC, so please e-mail Carlos to tell him you are or are not coming, and also for any other questions about next quarter's Karate Club Sessions.
11/19/01 - Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! Just to let you know, Thursday and Friday's classes will be canceled. That doesn't mean you can't practice at home! However, a session will be held at Seattle University's Connolly Center, please e-mail Carlos if you want to go. Connolly Center visitor's fee is $2.00.
11/08/01 - Alot has happened these past three weeks.
Students are starting to get the hang of the fundamental techniques of Karate, and soon they will learn the fundamentals of Karate Kumite, sparring.
The SCCC Karate-Do Club is in connection with the Seattle University Karate-Do Club. So if any of you transfer into Seattle University, you can still continue your training. Also, they hold evening karate classes at the Connolly Center from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, Tuesday and Thursday. So if any of you cannot make the 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM classes on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at the SAC in SCCC, you can try to get to the Connolly Center and make the evening classes. Please e-mail Sharlamane for any information regarding these times.
If you are still training with us, there will be a joint training session at with the Seattle University Karate Club, and the SCCC Karate Club. This will happen some time in the late spring weekend after finals. Session will include kata and kumite training, as well as a club competition. This is still in it's planning stages. So please watch out for this event.
10/23/01 - The SCCC Traditional Japanese Karate-Do Club has started it's first session at SCCC student activity center.
