The History of CyberHez

Years ago, on July 7th, 1975, a girl was born to Florence and John, probably the nicest people you ever met.  They spent several years nurturing her and her brother (b. 21 FEB 1978).  As the children grew, they learned—learned to drive each other up the wall, that is.

Well, the girl and her brother grew up like the strong New England stock their parents had become over the years, and they learned to be just, but kind.  They were products of an almost extinct upbringing: a truly nurturing, 100% nuclear family.  2 parents, 2 kids, a cat, and a white house with a fence.

That's not to say that either of them turned out particularly normal, though.

The girl was interested in learning, and always strove to understand whatever it was that she had most recently discovered she didn't yet know.  The result of encouraging parents, she went away to Plymouth State College, Plymouth, NH, and pursued her dream of becoming a meteorologist.  It fulfilled a lifelong desire that had begun before even she can really remember.  Her father still tells her about watching her stand for hours on the living room couch–just to see out the window... just so she could watch it snow.

Her ego known as CyberHez began with her first PC, lovingly dubbed "Harvey."  "CyberHez" was her first login for her first e-mail account with Juno, which she still uses even today.

While she was at college, she also was a radio personality for WPCR 91.7 FM: Plymouth College Radio, calling herself "The Random Element," because she didn't prefer to be limited to a single genre of music.  She instead would play Metallica right up against Yanni, with They Might Be Giants, Phil Collins, and the 49th Highlanders and Drum Corps of Scotland.  Oddly enough, her show was a big hit, and she will always tell an interesting story about a particular fan from the cafeteria lunch staff.

Her other alter-ego, --the keeper--, began one afternoon when her friend noticed she had a suspiciously large number of sharp scissors and pocket knives strewn about her residence-hall (dorm) room.  The same friend also read some of her poetry, revealing that she is a closet pyromaniac (but keeps it under CONTROL, thank you...).  --the keeper-- is thus shortened from "the keeper of fire and steel."  It was cool to be dangerous in college.

So, anyway, to make the rest of college short, CyberHez was able to graduate in 4 years with a degree in meteorology, a minor in technical mathematics, and a basic working knowledge of FORTRAN77 and HTML v.2.  However, after fruitlessly searching for a job for nearly a year, she learned:  that and a quarter would get you a phone call.

The following fall, she enrolled in classes for graphic design and computer art, then worked as an assistant instructor at Pioneer Computer School of Visual Arts for several months.  While it earned some money, it wasn't quite enough to pay the tuition bills from college, so she was forced to start sending resumes out again.

After working for 3 months as a page layout specialist for a grocers' co-op in New Hampshire (That meant I designed sales circular papers), she landed a position as a retail weather analyst/assistant forecaster at Strategic Weather Services, now Planalytics, Inc.  in PA.  This company has a unique perspective on forecasting that allows forecasting for up to a year in advance with startling accuracy.

And that brings us to where CyberHez is today:

  • BS/Meteorology, minor Technical Math.
  • Certified Graphic Design Specialist.
  • Programmer in FORTRAN, HTML, some VB.
  • Displaced NH (ex-)resident.
  • Living in a Philadelphia suburb.

It's your friend; use it wisely.
