Tropicana

Hybrid Tea 3' x 4'

(Unnamed seedling x 'Peace') x (Unnamed seedling x 'Alpine Glow')

Also known as Super Star

5-6" coral orange blooms with 33 petals. Moderate fruity fragrance.

TANORSTAR: Tantau, 1960; AARS Winner 1963

'Tropicana' has quickly become one of my favorite roses. The large, fragrant blooms are a glowing coral-orange that are bright without being glaring. Fragrance is moderate and fruity. I have read reports that this rose varies from non-fragrant to intensely fragrant. Weather conditions may play a factor in the amount of fragrance.

Growth habit is tall and upright and could be a short climber or pillar rose. 'Tropicana' lasts fairly well as a cut flower which is my favorite use for it. It blends so well with yellows, peaches, and other oranges. Blooms are large on long stems and the weight of the bloom can cause the stems to nod over on the bush. Blackspot has been a slight problem and has been shrugged off with minimal spraying.

I can't imagine my garden being without this rose! I really prefer 'Tropicana' over 'Fragrant Cloud' which has long been another favorite in this color class. Will suffer dieback in winter if not well protected.

ARS Rating: 7.6
