Harison's Yellow

Hybrid Foetida

'Rosa x Harisonii' aka 'Yellow Rose of Texas'

1830

It's the famous "Yellow Rose of Texas." It traveled with the pioneers, and today can be seen blooming in gardens and along roadsides across the country. Some believe it was the first artificially-bred rose in America, developed by G. F. Harison of New York City sometime around the mid to late 1700's. Dependable and hardy, it grows 4-6' tall and 3-5' wide. Bright yellow 2" blossoms cover the plant for two weeks in early spring.

This rose has been growing "wild" all around my parents' home in central Indiana. It continues to thrive with absolutely no attention. Blooms are bright yellow, semi-double, and fragrant. Grows about 5' high, arches and spreads on thin canes with thin, straight thorns. Blooms once in mid-May. Very hardy and tolerates partial shade. No disease problems observed.

ARS Rating: 8.2
