Named to introduce a new line of products from Crabtree & Evelyn, this rose has a beautiful color and excellent fragrance. Growth is robust and vigorous, although 'Evelyn' resents hard pruning. The hardest cutting that should be done is to merely remove spent blooms or dead canes. The growth habit is tall and upright. Towards the end of the season, the canes will become long and arching, making this an ideal candidate for pegging or training on a pillar. The foliage is susceptible to blackspot so a spray program is recommended.
'Evelyn' is not a rose that can be planted and left alone. It does require careful attention. While I loved the color and fragrance, I was disappointed by its lack of blooms and found the arching canes to be a nuisance. My rose threw out 4 canes that just kept growing and growing, despite my efforts to pinch them back, until it wound up looking like a misplaced climber. When I finally pruned the rose back to a reasonable height, I had cut back 5 1/2 feet of cane that only had one bloom on the end. The next year it hardly bloomed at all, probably due to the hard pruning I had done. In the right location and with proper care, I'm sure this would be a lovely rose.
