Brendan Price - The Issues
As the first
independent MEP for Dublin, he pledges to represent Dublin and Irish interests
in the expanded Europe, and protect the national,
economic, social, cultural and environmental interests of member states enshrined in the proximity principle and the Treaty of Rome and any future
European Constitution.Brendan
dismisses the notion of Ireland as a net beneficiary of Europe to the tune of 1.6 billion and
emphases our net contribution of 10 billion per annum through fisheries.
He dismisses
the servile grant mentality promulgated by earlier
representatives and as an independent is committed by right and responsibility, to
ensuring Ireland adopts a proactive role in determining the future of Europe for all it's
citizens.
Brendan Price is opposed to the growing
militarisation of Europe for anything other than defence and peacekeeping
initiatives, and rejects the concept of "Fortress Europe". Little known provisions for
military draft, inbuilt in the Masstricht Treaty and
preserved without mention in the draft European Constitution Treaty for the European
Union, were the subject of an appeal by Brendan and
other citizens to the Supreme Court, and he won a decision that can be invoked in Ireland without referendum.
Brendan will continue to oppose the draft or it's possible recall at some future time for
Europe, and he will work against it's incorporation by stealth
in the new European Constitution.
Brendan is committed to social justice for all citizens and his
campaign is of "people before parties". You
will see no posters, but a
reliance on the people of Dublin and Ireland to discuss and dialogue on the merits of
candidates and a free press to give full information
on all candidates to the electorate. He regards the role of the MEP
as nothing more or less, than a public servant of the
electorate, offering leadership and representation in equal measure. This election campaign is for direct representation
for the people of Dublin City and county in the European parliament.
With free trade in Irish land (FTIL).
Following Ireland's membership of the E.U., land
passed to larger and more speculative interests,
backed by stronger currencies. Ireland has since lost
circa 75% of it's full time farmers
and farm families from the land due to inadequate safeguards and failing to wait until
Irish incomes matched European averages. With smaller numbers of full time family farmers
left, facing loss of subsidies, and not being adequately remunerated for land stewardship
functions and participation in REPS.
Fisheries developing from historic lows.
Fisheries are poorly
represented in Europe. Traditions and skills continue to be lost from coastal
communities in the same manner as in farming. While our neighbours receive
disproportionate share out of total allowable catch (T.A.C.),
in violation of the proximity principles.
Brendan Price will vigoursly represent fisheries as he
will represent rural and urban interests.
Brendan seeks to protect the interests of all citizens in the new member
states from such exploitation
and redundancy as Ireland had suffered, until their incomes match ours.
As a lifelong wildlife and environmental
campaigner, Brendan's politics and beliefs are rooted in principles of national and social justice and his
efforts in all areas are assisting and enhancing. A
healthy environment is good for business, investment, community, family and all citizens,
and sustainable for other generations. Brendan is active in the
now, with an eye for the past and concern for Europe's
ageing population, who gave us our unequalled wealth and to the future, that
our children may continue to enjoy it and share it
evermore with 50m marginalised within Europe and billions without.
