BATTEN FAMILY


First Generation

John BATTEN was born about 1690 in Berkshire, England. He is said to have come to America with at least two brothers, Adam and Simon, a sister probably named Margaret, and John HAINES who married to one of his sisters. John BATTEN married about 1720 in England to Elizabeth ---- (1694-1747). He patented land in 1713/4 in Chester Co., PA. In 1740 Thomas BATTIN assigned his land rights to John Batten Jr. probably to settle their father's estate.


Second Generation

The children of John and Elizabeth BATTEN were:

(1) James BATTEN m. 1733 Mary MOORE
(2) John BATTIN Jr. m(1) 1742 Bradford MM, PA to Mary MARSHALL, daughter of William Marshall. He m(2) 1762 Bradford MM to Lydia MORGAN
(3) Richard BATTIN (1721-1777) m. 1747 Goshen MM, PA to Elizabeth JAMES (1727-1802), daughter of Thomas James.
(4) Thomas BATTIN Sr. (--1787) m.1744 Hannah COEBOURN
(5) Henry BATTIN (1724)
(6) Simon BATTIN (1727)

Third Generation

Thomas Batten was born by 1720 and in 1738 patented land in Chester and Lancaster Cos., PA. He had probably been a practicing Quaker as he signed the wedding certificates of his brothers Richard and John. He married to Hannah Coebourn by 1744 who acknowledged her marriage out of unity at Chester MM in 1744 and was subsequently granted a certificate to Bradford MM, Chester Co., Pa. They lived a short time in Maryland and then moved to Springhill Twp. Fayette Co., PA by 1769. Thomas made his will 7 Feb 1785 and died circa Jan 1787 in Springhill Twp. The children of Thomas and Hannah were:

(4) Elizabeth BATTEN m. Robert THORNTON of Wood Co., WV

Fourth Generation

Henry BATTEN was born 22 Dec 1750 in Chester Co., PA. He served in the Revolution as a sergeant from "near Uniontown," Fayette Co., PA. Henry married by 1776 probably in PA to Elizabeth LITTLE (1750-1830) the daughter of Adonijah LITTLE and Keziah STEVENSON. They settled on land left to Henry by his father's will of 1787 in Monongalia Co, VA. After his wife died in 1830, Henry moved to Porter Co., IN where he resided with his daughter Hannah Hageman's family until his death on 1 Feb. 1845. Henry is buried in the Gossett Cemetery, Porter Co., IN. Henry and Elizabeth were the parents of five daughters, three of which were triplets:

(2) Hannah BATTEN (1779-1843) m. Jan HAGEMAN
(3) Elizabeth BATTEN (1781) m. 1802 Monongalia Co., VA to Joseph MERRILL
(4) Eleanor BATTEN (1781) m. 1807 Elisha SNODGRASS
(5) Jemima BATTEN (1781) m. 1799 John MERRILL
