BARTON FAMILY

First Generation

Roger BARTON was born about 1628 probably in England. His arrival in America has not been documented. In 1662 he was one of three men appointed to lay out the town of Brookhaven, Long Island which was then a part of the colony of Connecticut. In 1664 he was named deputy of the General Court and was probably the same "Mr. Barton" who was made a freeman of Connecticut at the General Assembly which met at Hartford on 12 May 1664.

10 June 1664 the name "Rog. Barton" is signed to a Brookhaven deed, as recorder. 10 mo. 12, 1664 "Rog. Barton" signed with others a contract to build a mill. He may have been earliest town clerk of Brookhaven.

On 23 Jan 1664/5 he was appointed at Brookhaven as one of six arbitrators. On 2 Feb 1664/5 he purchased land in Brookhaven.

In May 1666 orders were given by Gov. Nicolls for the arrest and expulsion of Roger Barton and Robert Bloomer from Brookhaven due to a controversy over which colony should govern Brookhaven. Both probably fled to Connecticut, leaving their families behind.

Roger purchased on 20 Nov 1678 a tract of 102 acres from John Archer in Fordham, NY.

On 4 July 1682 the Town of Westchester gave to Roger Barton, yeoman, one parcel of land where his dwelling-house stands.

In June 1688 Roger Barton made a deed in Westchester, NY which served as his will and named his children as Elisha, Elijah and Roger being of age, wife Mary and his minor children Noah, Enoch and Joseph. He probably died the same year but no probate record has been found.

Roger Barton probably married in England to a woman named Mary. This may have possibly been a second marriage. In 1698, Mary, widow of Roger Barton, is found living with her sons Noah and Joseph in Westchester, NY.
