PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release on Monday, July 14,
2008
With less than 30 days
remaining in their current Contract with Verizon, Members of Local 2004 of
the Communications Workers of America are marking their ballots on a Strike
Authorization Vote today. A positive vote will give permission to the
Union’s Executive Board to call a strike, if necessary, in order to apply
pressure on Verizon during Contract negotiations.
All CWA Locals across
the mid-Atlantic area, which includes West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and
Washington, D.C., will be conducting similar votes, which will be reported
when complete. The current Contract negotiations affect Verizon employees
in these areas associated with both traditional “land-line” and fiber fed
telecommunications. Negotiations are also ongoing in the New York area,
along with Pennsylvania and Delaware areas served by Verizon.
The current Contract
between Verizon and the CWA will expire on midnight of Saturday, August 2,
2008. CWA Local 2004 represents the Verizon employees in Marion, Monongalia
and Preston Counties of West Virginia. Negotiations began in the fall of
2007, but broke off shortly thereafter. The current round of bargaining
began on May 27, 2008.
