INTRODUCTION


You have recently moved to Los Angeles with your family and you are curious to learn more about Hispanic Culture. So, you invite 3 of your new classmates to join you in this cultural quest. Here are some suggestions that your Spanish class has come up with.

TASK

With your group of 4 you will all choose a project that you find interesting. You will have approximately 2 months to research your topic and develop your project. Your final project will consist of the following:

1. A 1.5-3 page written report in Spanish: Typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, Font 12, 1" margins. Every member must contribute significantly to this portion of the project.

2. A bibliography of all sources used to research your project. Must include at least 3 websites. This is due with your written rough draft.

3. A 3-5 minute class presentation in Spanish. The purpose of this component is to share what you learned with the class. Every group member must participate in the oral presentation.

4. A visual presentation of your research project. Be creative!!!! Some possible ideas are: Video,Photography,Power Point,Poster/s

PROCESS

1. Do a photo presentation of spanish-speaking cultures in Southern CA. Choose a perspective: history, migration, pop-culture, gang-culture, music, family values, etc.

2. Compare and contrast 3-4 latin american musical genres. (Ranchera, Rap en Espa�ol, Pop, Salsa, Jazz, Cumbia, Rock en espa�ol, etc.)

3. Review four restaurants of latin american or spanish cuisine in the L.A. area.

4. Compare 2 museums of latin american or spanish culture in the L.A. area.

5. Compare and contrast 2 telenovelas (soap operas) en espa�ol.

6. Do a study of Spanish/English bilingualism throughout the media. (TV, music, movies, radio, literature, etc.) Show examples of the two cultures influencing one another in Los Angeles.

7. Do a study of the uses of t� vs. Ud. (its social implications) for spanish speakers in Los Angeles by interviewing 4-6 native spanish-speakers.

8. Go to two theater performances in Spanish and then write a description and review of both.

9. Choose two latin american or spanish films. Describe and write a review of each.

10. Do a study of the uses of Spanish in the business world by interviewing 3-5 people, each in a different sector, who use Spanish in their work.

11. Interview one family who has immigrated to the U.S. from a spanish-speaking country and compare their story to those of the two families in the novel The Rain of Gold, or the family in the TV show (PBS) American Family.

12. OTHER: Choose a topic that interests you (with teacher approval) and develop your own project. (Ej: Machismo in latin american cultures; Compare & contrast the Catholic church in Latin America with that of the U.S.)
