| Vermicomposting is a controlled method of breaking down compost material with the help of special worms called "red wigglers" (eisenia foetida), "vermi-" resembling worms. These hungry worms increase the speed of the decomposition process in compost making for rich nutrients and enzymes. Vermicompost is one of the best ways to naturally fertilize your lawn and garden. Another product vermicomposting produces is a "juice". Much like the process to make tea or coffee, the juice is nutrient rich water that can be drained from the compost bin in which the red wigglers live. It can be sprinkled over gardens, lawns, and potted plants. When the juice is drained one has to be careful not to lose any of the wigglers, as the young are numerous, though tiny. They can be strained from the mix as the juice is drained from the bin to another container. |
