Compost Page 4
Different kinds of compost bins.
The Department of Environmental Protection distributes bins, which are easy to use and very effective.

To the left is the New Age Composter.  To the right (top and side views) is the Earth Machine.  Both are inexpensive and come with composting guides.
The Holbin (left)- An old garbage barrel with the bottom cut out and holes drilled around sides is an easy way to make a compost bin.  Be sure to cover with lid, or if lid is not available cover with rug, plastic sheet, or tarp.
Camouflage Bin
Stack Style
The Camouflage Bin is small and ideal for someone who does not produce much in the way of compost material.  It is also ideal for people with no room for a large bin.
Stack Style composting is an alternative to heavy digging during the process to create a new garden bed.  In this photo (above) we see the different layers, from left to right, ground with grass and leaves.  In the middle is a piece of cardboard over the ground to create a home for worms and other decomposers.  To the right we see compost material, greens and browns, mixed and covered with more cardboard.  More layers can be added.  Treat like a regular compost, lift top cardboard, turn compost and water, then replacing top cardboard.  Use a few rocks or logs to hold down top.  Thin cardboard is better to use.  Bottom cardboard can be broken into smaller sections to allow better passage of decomposers to the "good stuff".
