Perfect Sense

Did you ever have one of those days? You know the kind where you crawl out of bed, half asleep just knowing you should be staying there. To Adrianna Green, that day was about to happen. Addy, is what her close friends called her. She was a very popular girl, maybe because her parents were rich, or maybe just because Adrianne didn't act like it. She was one of Morningtown Highs' three muskateers. The rest of the school had dubbed her and her two best friends that back in middle school. Ever since the junior class could remember, Adrianne Green, Charlotte Hudson, and Leyla McKenzie had been the best of friends.

Prologue

Charlotte Hudson stared out the window of her biology class, watching the seniors disperse from their graduation practice. Ha, that'll serve ya right, she thought to herself as the rain began to come in sheets. The teacher was boring her to sleep and wishing bad will on the seniors was actually just a way of passing the time. Looking at her watch she began to pack her books. As she zipped her backpack the bell rang letting everyone know it was time to go home.

"Charly!" A short, blonde headed girl called her name from down the hall. "Wait up Charly, I have to tell you something!"

Charlotte turned to see one of her best friends running down the hall towards her.

"Leyla, you always have something to tell me. Besides you're riding home with me right?"

Leyla McKenzie was a seventeen year old, as well as Charlotte. Ley, as most called her was a very bubbly blonde with a stripe of freckles across her nose. She was known as the junior class gossip.

The two girls walked together out to the sudent parking lot, Leyla talking about the days gossip the whole time. Charlotte pushed the double doors open and stepped out into the rain that had so rudely drenched the seniors earlier.

A thin, red headed girl waved to them from across the parking lot. She was holding an umbrella over her brand new car, pretending to shield it from the rain.

"Hey Addy, nice ride." Charlotte said inspecting the brand new Mustang.

Adrianne smiled and giggled as her two best friends drooled over her birthday present. Her parents were very well off and the brand new baby blue mustang was nothing compared to the cruise they sent her, Charlotte, and Leyla on last summer.

"I don't suppose you girls want a ride?" Adrianne said grinning.

"Yeah ok, whatever!" Leyla said hopping into the front seat. "I got shotgun, Charly get your skinny butt in the back."

Charlotte laughed and climbed in chunking her books to the side. "You are so spoiled! I would kill for a car like this." Charlotte said smacking Adrianne's shoulder.

"I'm not spoiled, Charly. I didn't even ask for a new car. Mom and dad suprised me just twenty minutes ago." Adrianne started the car and backed carefully out of her parking space. They drove all over town and growing bored fast, Adrianne decided to take the girls back to Charly's car at the school.

The rain came harder and was making it hard for Adrianne to see the road ahead of her. She rounded the curve leading to the school, but noticed a yellow light coming towards her. "What's that?" Adrianne asked no one in particular.

Leyla screamed and looked over at Adrianne before the truck hit them. It was a semi, and the other headlight had been blocked by the curve in the road. Silence was all their was for a good five minutes.

Adrianne woke with an unbearable pain in her head. She tried to raise her hand to her head but realized she was trapped. Panic set in as she looked around her. They had been in an accident, and she was still in the car. Leyla was not in the frot seat where she had been just moments ago. She could hear whimpering from behind her. Adrianne turned the best she could to see Charlotte crumpled in the back seat.

"Wha......what...?" Charlotte said in a tiny voice.

"Charly, hon we were hit by a truck, you stay still it looks like you might have hurt your back." Adrianne said grimacing at the position her friend was in.

Still not knowing what had happened to Leyla, Adrianne tried reaching for her purse that was still where she had set it. In her console beside her. Before she could get it she heard sirens in the background.

Later that night......

Adrianne lay in her hospital bed trying not to move. Her head was pounding, and the doctor had told her she had a concussion. She was waiting for her mother to come back with news about Charlotte and Leyla. Just as she was about to ring for the nurse her mother walked in quietly.

"Mom." Adrianne said in a shaky voice. "How are they, are they ok?"

Her mother covered her mouth and hugged Adrianne. "Oh baby, I'm so sorry." She said as she weeped.

"What? Mom what is it?" Adrianne said dreading the answer.

"It's Leyla sweety. She's gone."

Adrianne drew in a sharp breath. "NO! NO YOU'RE WRONG!" She screamed for the loss of her best friend. Sobs came shaking her whole body. "I killed her." Adrianne said through the tears.

"Baby, it wasn't you're fault. The truck crossed the center line. Charlotte is  doing ok though. She didn't have many injuries. Just the one or two scrapes and a fracture in her back." Mrs. Green said crying along with her daughter.

Adrianne's tears slowed a bit. "You mean she hurt her back?" Mrs. Green just nodded her head. "Is she gonna walk again mom?"

"They don't know honey, don't you worry yourself about that right now. Get some rest." She turned the light out over the bed and kissed her daughter goodnight. "I'll see you in the morning. I love you."

The door closed behind her and Adrianne rolled the best she could in her bed. "Why Leyla?" she thought to herself. Slient tears rolled down her already wet cheeks. "I can't believe I killed my best friend" Adrianne thought. More tears came along with sleep. Nightmares filled her restless sleep, and would for a long time to come.
