Off Road Golf Cart Project
April 12, 2002
Today I put sat the old body on the cart (rear section), installed the battery and took a little test ride aroud the yard. Everything worked great until I decided to climb a small bank in the front yard. The cart started to smoke BAD! Well, it turns out I had too much oil in it. When you lift the cart, the motor tilts. If you have the cart full of oil (2 qts) oil will go up the crank case breather tube and into the air box. So, I drained some oil out. and it was fine. However the terrain around here is ALL hills. This could be a problem. So after some discussions with some people, I decided to make a breather / filter by-pass hose. If this happens again, it wont go into the air box.

I went down to the local auto parts store and found a breather filter. It is a Purolator breather filter. (not sure what it is for found it off the self) part #B13153. I also got 5ft. of 5/16 fuel line. This should do it. I am going to run it up through the highest part on the frame, and mount the filter end down by the battery. (I will show pictures of this) Everyone I have talked to said, that if you only use 1 1/2 qts of oil and only fill it between the A & D on the dip stick this will solve the problem. But this by-pass hose wont hurt either.
After this problem was solved, the cart ran well. Everything with the suspension worked good! Had lot's of power, climbed hills well. (I was worried about this with the 24in. tires). The new body should be here soon, and the cart should be done in the next 2 weeks or so. Check back often for finishing details and photos.
