What is a Custom Cab? | Interior/ Mods | ||||||||||||||||
NEWS!!! & LINKS | |||||||||||||||||
I had seen Custom Cabs around town, mostly 1979 to 1983 models, most in very bad shape. Then, I saw a yellow 1987 Custom Cab . It had big tires and four wheel drive. It had obviously been restored. It looked great!!! The guy who owned it live near by, but he moved shortly after I saw the truck, so I never got around to asking him more about it. I needed a truck. I liked my car, it was very economical and could carry my family, but I NEEDED a truck. I have a wife and three kids. If I sold my car to get a truck, what kind of truck will carry all of them if our mini-van has to go in the shop. In the old days, my Dad just loaded-up all us kids in the bed of his old Datsun pickup -- with a camper shell -- and it was all good and legal. But, today everyone needs a seatbelt, and if they are under a certain size and age, they need a special seat!!! That's why they make Crew Cab trucks now, because everyone should be in a seat belt. But, I didn't have $30,000 to plop-down on a new Toyota or Nissan Crew Cab, and the old crew cabs are all Chevy's and Fords with 450cid V8 engines that get 3.5 mpg. I can't afford either of those options. I remembered the yellow Toyota Custom Cab I saw a year before -- I realized, that would be the perfect solution to my problem: An economical four cylinder engine, seating for five, a six foot truck bed, and an average price around $4,000. After nearly a year of watching the classified and photo-ads around town I began Google searching "Toyota Custom Cab". Finally, I found one: 1500 miles away in Texas -- I decided to buy it because it was a solid front axel 4X4 with a carburetor engine. The most desired Toyota 4X4 configuration with an economical, easy-to-fix engine -- "Who could ask for anything more?" I sent the seller a check with some paperwork and began looking for a transport truck to bring my Toyota to me from halfway across the country. Finally, after a very long wait I gave-up on finding an inexpensive transport truck, in a timely manner, and decided to fly to Texas to drive my truck home to California. |
