Here is two different kinds of Ration Crates I've contructed out of wood. Top section is a few views of a K-ration crate. I have made this crate in a couple of forms, some open with a removeable top and some are just glued shut. Inside the opening one you can see the inner cardboard packing box as well the 36 individual rations that fit inside (12 each of Breakfast, Supper, and Dinner).
These crates are made from 1/32" thick basswood glued together. The "nails" are just little dots pressed into the wood with a ballpoint pen, except for on the opening version which has tiny pins representing the exposed nails. The text is (believe it or not) printed on the wood using my inkjet printer. The wood is so thin that it goes right through no problem. The K-ration crate measures 2 1/16th" W x 3 9/16th" L x 1 3/8th H and the C-ration measures 2 1/16th" W x 3 1/4" L x 1 3/8th H. And if you want to try your hand at making your own, I've put images and instructions in the Resouces section.
Next is a C-ration Crate. As of yet this one doesn't open. (I really just need a bunch of closed ones to put in dioramas.) It has about the same construction as the K crate, but it has 3 planks instead of two on the top and it's a little shorter. These closed versions are filled with a block of wood to make them heavier and sturdy.
