This is Paruro, a beautiful farming town of 3,800 people about 2 1/2 hours from the big city of Cusco. It is located at 10,000 feet above sea level, and there are more horses than there are cars here. Click on the photo for a bigger picture. The Amazon River is the largest river in the world, but it has to start somewhere. Here the Paruro River is so small that you can walk across it. The source of the Amazon is considered to be a few miles further up the river. |

After getting settled in for a couple of days, we took a hike to Cusibamba. That's a Quechua name that means "Happy (cusi) Place (bamba)". It was about two and a half hours to walk there along the Paruro River. There were some beautiful waterfalls along the way. Stanley decided to be brave and stand at the very edge of the cliff. |
