Project "Roja" Bushwacker Cut out Fender Flares
If you want larger tires on a Jeep Cherokee, then you need to do some lifting and cutting. The first step for us, based on parts arrival was installing the Bushwacker Cut Out fender flares. I got them from www.4wd.com/shopcherokee . A note on where we installed these fender flares. I know the whole point of this site is being able to do these projects at home. Due to a storm we needed to be undercover, and it was a sunday, so instead of driving my neighbors crazy, we installed these flares at the U.S. Navy automotive Hobby shop. A word about the hobby shop. Imagine your high school automotive shop. Pretty much the same place, most sailors aren't very well off so we do most of our own car repairs. The Navy has made a place for us to do this that conforms to EPA standars for disposal of hazardous waste such as oil. I'm sorry but in todays sue happy world there is no civilian place like it. There was a time I looked into it, and the insurance alone would make it impossible. Sorry. However; we only used the floor space, all tools were are own, so you could do this in your driveway.
We began by removing the ends of the bumper. This exposed the Air Conditioning Vacuum Resevoir. We did this to prevent cutting into anything important.
We removed the nuts that hold the factory flares on. After breaking off a few dozen, and the colossal length of time it took to remove each nut, we found that tightening them until they broke was the quickest way to remove them.
Now that all the nuts are removed from the back of the factory flares, they pull right off. The brackets that held the factory flares were a little more difficult, but pulled off eventually.
We placed tape from the bottom of the marker light to the inside of the wheel well. Now it was time to cut! We argued about the best way to begin, said a little prayer, and then cut the metal below the marker light off the front fenders.
We measured 5" in from the marker light edge towards the whell well. Then we taped a vertical line from the 5" mark. We then taped a horizontal line from the top of the fender well to intersect the vertical line. With a grease pencil we drew an arc inside the two lines
