Welcome to the website for Pack 72. Our site was designed to provide our visitors and our cub scouts with information about Pack 72; it's activities, schedules, upcoming events, advancements and general Cub Scouting activities. Visit our site regularly for up to date schedules and activities. Here is a link to our Troop 72 site also.
Pack HistoryTroop 72 and Pack 72 were founded in 1952 by the late Dr. Karl Warmkessel and chartered by a "Group of Citizens, Inc. Of Fogelsville, Pennsylvania". The distinction of being an independent Troop and Pack still holds to today and we are one of the few independent Scouting organizations left in the nation. Both Troop and Pack 72 are members of the North Valley District of Minsi Trails Council. Troop and Pack 72 were located at Camp Moritz, in Upper Macungie Township off Hilltop Road (west of Allentown, Pennsylvania). This site was originally a community park until 1941. Since the late 1940's and early 1950's, it had served Troop and Pack 72. The grounds consisted of three buildings, the Scout House, Explorer Building, and Shellhammer Lodge (named for the late Terry Shellhammer). Shellhammer Lodge was a storage facility and bunk area, but was destroyed by a fire in 1990. The Scout House was once an open pavilion and later enclosed for Troop and Pack 72's use. The property occupied by Camp Moritz was never owned by the Scouts, but leased to us by the Lehigh Portland Cement Company. In March 1995, we learned that Lehigh Portland had entered into a sale agreement with a commercial developer and that we had to vacate the premises by June 1996. Camp Moritz was demolished in November 1996 - "Gone, but not forgotten". In return, Lehigh Portland leased to us an alternate 23 acre track of land off Route 100 near Applewood. As a result, the Troop and Pack were faced with a huge undertaking - the funding and construction of a new Scout facility. The leadership of the Troop and Pack faced this challenge head on. They knew the continued existence of these two Scouting organizations was vital for the boys and the community of Fogelsville. It was indispensable for us to maintain our 42 year charter. They also realized that the goal of constructing a new building (which had to meet all law codes) was far beyond the financial means of the Scouts. Nevertheless, the Troop and Pack leadership formed a Building Committee which designed and drew up the plans for the new building, provided site surveys for approval by Upper Macungie Township, negotiated the lease with Lehigh Portland, and actively promoted fundraisers for the construction. The committee solicited local businesses and Scout alumni for donations and financial support. Some fundraisers included the "Buy A Block" for the building campaign, the sale of tickets for a David Copperfield Magic Show and a Rummage Sale. Through all of these efforts, along with help from Lehigh Portland and a $10,000 grant from the Trexler Trust Foundation of Allentown, Pennsylvania, a total of $74,000 was raised. Approximately $100,000 was spent on the construction of the building through donated labor and materials. Hassen Creek Lodge (named for the nearby creek) at Camp Spirit was formally dedicated on May 19, 1996. Recently, work began on the construction of a Chapel area in the nearby wooded area. A brick arch (an Eagle Scout project of Scouter Dave Kutzor) was moved from Camp Moritz and put at the entrance to the path that leads to the theater-like seating area. As you can see, Troop 72 and Pack 72 are in full use of the new facility. The Project Manager for the construction of Camp Spirit was Bill Murray. His dedicated and talented efforts drove this project toward its completion. Numerous other leaders, parents, friends, and Scouts, worked on the building starting in the Fall of 1995 through the Winter, and into the Spring of 1996.
