THE BOY WHO COULD
TURN BACK THE CLOCK Pat Grisail played in the dirt, pondering his next move. Today had been a horrible day at school, where nothing had seemed to go right. Yesterday, on the other hand, had a been a really good day. “Pat”, called his mum, “Come in and get washed up. It’s time for tea”. “What are we having?” he called back. “Mushroom soup”. Pat hated mushroom soup. That made his mind up for him. He turned back the clock to yesterday morning. Pat was a little boy with a special power. He could turn back time for himself, and relive the past. The only drawback was that if he turned the clock back say, two weeks, he would have to live through those whole two weeks in real time to get back to where he started. He could not turn the clock forward to get out of bad situations. That is why he wasn’t sure if he should go back to yesterday or not, because he knew that even though he would have a lot of fun, eventually he would have to go through today again. He could put off eating that mushroom soup, but sooner or later he would have to eat it. So there he was, back in yesterday morning. Of course, it wasn’t
called ‘yesterday’ anymore. Now it was ‘today’.
Pat was eating a bowl of Weet-Bix with blue food colouring in it, so
it looked like something a mad scientist or a monster would eat. Blue
was Pat’s favourite colour, and he always begged his mum to put
blue colouring in all his food and drink. He thought it made it taste
better. At school, Pat was the hero of the day. He knew Yo-Yos were about to become popular again, so he took in his a day before everyone else did. He had all the time in the world to practise tricks, and he was getting really good at Walking the Dog and Around the World. In class, his teacher would ask a multiplication question and give a little Easter Egg to whoever called out the answer first. Pat knew the answers before the teacher even asked them, but he let some other kids win some eggs too, just to be fair. At lunch he managed to duck before a stray soccer ball hit him in the head. Yes, it was a great day. For tea, his family had pizza. Blue pizza. When they had finished, Pat went into the backyard and pondered his
next move. |
