I was flipping rocks over, and found a rupee.
Last week, I went walking along the bank of the Thames at low tide, and found rocks, bones, and bits of garbage from the 1600s. One of the awesome things about the Master's program im in is that when I was relating this tale to some of the other grad students, most of them got excited and wanted to go next time I went, rather than me simply receiving odd looks.
So today, we went. And I did spend time flipping rocks over, and I did find a rupee. A one rupee coin from India, from 2002. I also found bones, interesting blobs of flint, 1600s tobacco pipe fragments, metal hooks, shells, and other old strangeness.
Afterwards, we went to that cheese shop that I took that last photo I uploaded at, and had lunch in a pub nearby. From there, we had a meeting with most of the people from our Master's program (8 or so people), and we showed off the stuff we found. Now even more want to go next time.
Interestingly, we ran into one of our professors on the way back from walking the Thames, and told him we found bones. He naturally wanted to see what we found, and told us that somewhat often, human bones wash up there as well.
It's rather nice, for a change, when I find a bit of bone and show it to people, they aren't simply casually interested, or feigning interest, but they'll go- "Oooh, it's a right distal humerus from an adult cow!"
Later this evening, we were standing infront of the institute of archaeology, and realized that it was Halloween, and none of us had any plans. So hit a couple pubs, went to Camden, and had a good end to a good day.
