Timeline of the Nickel Plate Cloverleaf History of TLE&W



1874 - Toledo & Maumee Narrow Gauge Railroad (3 ft. Gauge) begins operating 7.5 miles of track between Toledo and South Toledo.

1876 - Toledo & Grand Rapids Railroad opens a 5.67 mile line between Waterville and Maumee City.

1877 - Toledo & Maumee Narrow Gauge Railroad and Toledo & Grand Rapids Railroad joined.

1879 - The 112 mile Toledo, Delphos & Burlington Railroad is formed from the consolidation of the Toledo, Delphos & Indianapolis; Delphos & Kokomo; Delphos, Bluffton & Frankfort and Toledo & Maumee Narrow Gauge railroads.

1882 - The Toledo, Cincinnati & St. Louis Railroad is created by several mergers. The TC & St. Louis becomes a part of the Grand Narrow Gauge Trunk, reaching from Toledo to Ft. Worth and Houston, Texas.

1886 - The TC & St. Louis disappears into the Toledo, St. Louis & Kansas City Railroad, also known as the Cloverleaf.

1887 - On June 26th, the Cloverleaf track was widened from narrow gauge to standard gauge (4' 8-1/2") in one day, between Toledo, Ohio and Frankfort, Indiana. Remainder of the line to St. Louis is widened by June 1st, 1889.

1900 - TSL & KC is reorganized into the Toledo, St. Louis & Western Railway, keeping the nickname of the Cloverleaf.

1922 - The TSL & W becomes the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Cloverleaf Subdivisions of the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad (Nickel Plate Road).

1964 - On October 16th, the Nickel Plate becomes part of the Norfolk & Western Railway.

1974 - The Toledo & Lake Erie Railway moves to the Waterville - Grand Rapids line from Dorr Street and Secor Road in Toledo. Operations begin with Baldwin Switcher #202 from Detroit Edison pulling the first train.

1976 - The TLE&W buys the trackage between Waterville and Grand Rapids, Ohio from Norfolk & Western Railway, (MP 15.0 to MP 25.0) and obtained trackage rights to MP 14.0 Norfolk & Western retains some of the trackage within Waterville limits.

2003 - Toledo, Lake Erie & Western reopens Waterville station for passenger service.
