Howdy
Alpine
In the region around Alpine, people have traveled and lived for over 11,000 years. Throughout that time, four distinct cultures emerged and shaped the history and heritage of the region. You get a beautiful overview in the small but great Museum of the Sul Ross University. The exhibits capture the history and the contributions of the Native Americans, the Spanish, the Mexicans, and the Anglo-Americans. This area was the Last Frontier of Texas.

The town has a unique character. A mix of Cowboys, Art and the refreshing influence of the Students, who study at Sul Ross everything between "Rodeo-Riding" and the Arts! In the last years it attracted a lot of artists around the world and Galleries are popping up, especially in the old downtown. Last year they had even a wonderful Art Festival.
Mural in Alpine
We stayed last year in June 2003 the first time in Alpine (usually we just drove through there to Fort Davis and Marathon). We had so much fun meeting the locals and walking through downtown. You will never believe though what happened to us! We were walking up towards Sul Ross as we saw to our right a "dust devil" approaching. We tried to outrun him, but that little miniature-tornado wanted us *lol*. We got caught right in the middle of him for couple of seconds.... For two days we were plucking out stones out of our ears, hair and other corners of our bodies! Now how many people do you know, to whom that happenend?!

Now, some of the things we did during our visit:

During our first stay we had the luck of meeting the owners of the then brandnew Gallery Ashby and Allison. A wonderful couple and Debbie (Deborah Allison) is in my opinion the most talented water-color-artist I have known so far! Her style is so unique and awesome... it humbled me... Yup, yours truely has still to work a lot on her skills *sigh* - But it is always fun to have challenges in life! So, if you visit Alpine, check out her
Gallery on 702 E. Holland Ave. Click on this link or on the picture to visit her website and see some of her artwork (my favorite at the moment is the painting "Private Garden - Normandy", probably because I lived there.).
