sthe basement. She was not hurt but was a very frightened lady. Later Mrs. Miller found a radish and carrot in her pocket which she said she never had any in the house. Also at the home of Katherine Bloomquist there was a 2 by 8 board driven through the brick foundation. The brick that was knocked out was found in the basement on top of a light globe which was setting on a shelf. Neither the brick or light globe was broken. A tornado can do many strange things. There was even a stray black and white spotted dog in the town after the storm. Don't know if someone dropped him off or the wind blew him in.

The business places that were damaged were the Yunker Tavern, Post Office and grocery store, gas station, Town Hall and many homes. Also two farms on the edge of town, one on the south end, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Becker and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bloomquist on the north end. The two Churches, Antique Shop, school, and twelve homes which were in the west end of town received only minor damage.

Many meals were brought in and served to the people in town and the workers for about three weeks. The Meals on Wheels, and many Church groups and other organizations from neighboring towns. Many friends and relatives from far and near were great people. Also livesavers to Dale Bloomquist and Gene Becker were the day when the farmers came in with their tractors and plows for a plowing bee. There were 32 outfits and went over 450 acres in just a few hours. All these people that helped in any way, weather it was labor of their hands or food or money donations, will never be forgotten by the people in Magnet.


There has been many changes in this town of Magnet since 1893, with all the disasters and people dying or people moving away and someone else moving in and taking over a business.

The Dennis Elevator and Fertilizer

Jess Dennis leased the elevator from his brother Cliff, in the fall of 1954. Later in 1964 Jess brought the elevator, he added a feed mill in 1900. In 1970 he purchased the fertilizer plant and equipment from Siouxland Fertilizer Inc. After the tornado Jess rebuilt his place of business and added the dry- (cont.)
