(Yellowstone Trip - June 9 to June 24, 2000 - Part 13 )
Thursday, June 22, 2000

Last morning in Yellowstone - we packed and headed south.  Another beautiful day, so we made a few stops around Lewis Falls.  There were only bird sightings to report.

"W-A-A-A-A-A!!!" we cried as we passed through the South Entrance.  We had one more night to stay in the Tetons, but it was still hard to leave Yellowstone!

Breakfast at Flagg Ranch, then on to Colter Bay Visitor's Center.  Our feet weren't screaming too loudly, so we decide to do the Swan Lake/Heron Pond hike.

True to its name, we saw a huge trumpeter swan nest, and the pair who own it, on Swan Lake.

Further down the trail was a great spot to sit on a log in the shade and watch the moose and heron show.  We saw four large bull moose, two great blue herons, and many ducks.  John said, "This is too easy!"

Moose galore!!
We checked into our Signal Mountain Lodge Cabin and hung around until time for the float trip.  Signal Mountain's float trip uses a small 10 person raft, which we thought would be preferable to the large 40 person rafts used by Grand Teton Park and other companies.  In the small raft we were able to go down some of the smaller channels that fed into the Snake river.  We saw lots of evidence of beaver, and about four of the critters themselves.  One male moose was in the willows on the river bank, and we floated by some mule deer.  There was a wide variety of birds, including blue herons, osprey, Canada geese and their goslings, and bright mountain bluebirds.
Mostly we saw great scenery from the different perspective of the river.  The peaceful and quiet setting was worth the ticket price.  The float trip started at the Signal Mountain Lodge around 5:30 pm and returned us there about 8:30 pm after two hours on the river.
We had to settle for an ice cream bar from the Signal Mountain Lodge convenience store to ease our Moose Tracks withdrawals!  I guess it was time to get used to it - the next day we headed for Salt Lake City.
