| Still no action from Artemisia, so John and Carol headed back up the path to watch Riverside erupt. Although we missed it’s opening number, Riverside put on a long, great show. | ![]() |

| When Riverside finished, we returned to Artemisia, where the conversation had evolved to whether the wait was worth its notable feature: before it erupts, you can hear a great thumping sound and feel the earth shake! Finally, after more waiting, with it seriously overdue, we noticed that it was bubbling differently. Is that good or bad, we wonder? | |

All of a sudden the other Matt started
running down the bank overlooking the geyser and shouted "THIS

And sure enough, we felt the earth shake and heard the THUMP, THUMP, THUMP!! |

Carol got closer and sat on the ground to get her money’s worth for the long wait, while John tried to take some pictures in the dense, swirling, steamy fog. |

| Artemisia put on a great display, spurting as much as 15 feet into the air, and pushing out so much water that waves about a foot high were surging over the edge of the pool 30 feet from the center. | ![]() |
| So much steam and spray!
After being drenched and emptying two cameras (hoping they weren’t damaged by the spray), we headed back up Geyser Hill to the Lion Group. |
