- We could hardly believe the weather could get worse, but
we wake to snow and sleet - on Memorial Day! That doesn't happen in North
Carolina! We dress as warmly as we possibly can, and hurry to see the Black
Sands Geyser Basin (surprisingly beautiful colors) before the 10 AM ranger
talk. We finish seeing the Upper Geyser Basin, as well as some Canada Geese
and their tiny goslings huddling by the Firehole River. We wait for the
Daisy group to erupt, and are not disappointed. |
| Next we're off to picnic
at Midway GB. Great Fountain had just finished erupting as we arrived,
but our disappointment was quickly extinguished by watching nearby White
Dome erupt twice in 10 minutes as we had lunch parked beside it. |
 |
| The sky finally starts
to clear, but the temperature still dictates wearing all the clothes we
can put on. We proceed to Lower GB -- gosh, we've seen so many geysers,
hot springs and mud pots, what more can there be? Wow! Grand Prismatic
Spring and Excelsior -- both words and photographs are inadequate. Wow! |
| We head down to West
Yellowstone and dinner. Another great meal at Three Bears Lodge hits the
spot, and as night falls we go back up the Madison valley. We see plenty
of bison, with their orange newborns frolicking in the meadow, and say
good night to the trumpeter swans. |
