| Tuesday, June 1, 1999 - The weather is still cold, but the sunshine is bright. As we drive toward Canyon, we are startled by a herd of Bison coming down the road straight toward us (a "Buffalo Jam" for the morning's entertainment!). |

| We sit still as they stroll by the car and give us these great shots of their beautiful babies! |

| After checking out what's
open at Canyon (not much this early in the season), we circle some overlooks,
watch the osprey nesting, and eat another car picnic at a cold, windy --
but sunny -- overlook. We stretch our legs on a very muddy Clear Lake Trail
and return along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone --
wow! Near a thermal area, we encounter a man who says he can smell grizzlies,
"and they're close." We had a good laugh at this real nut case until we
saw trees with long scratch marks -- gulp!
We finish the trail early, and head down the Hayden Valley, but it looks deserted of wildlife in mid afternoon. Even after seeing so many spectacular thermal features, both the Dragon's Mouth and Mud Volcano are awesome! We check into the snazzy Lake Hotel for one night, grab a quick dinner and set off to look for griz. We wait at three sites, first Fishing Bridge where we had heard several reports of sightings -- nothing -- then part way up the Hayden Valley -- see nothing but a crow there -- back to Pelican Creek as night falls -- still no griz. |
