1999 Yellowstone Trip (Sunday) - Page 2
Sunday, May 30, 1999 - Rained a-a-a-l-l-l-l-l-l-l day. We rose early again and climbed up to Observation Point to watch Old Faithful Geyser. What a great view (even in the rain)! Because OFG was late, and we took a wrong turn, we missed the 10 AM ranger talk. Watching Solitary Geyser eased our loss.
We grabbed an early lunch to warm up and drove over to West Thumb. The mud pots were soupy from the rain, and even the geysers didn't seem very warm as we walked along the frozen lake. The cold rain turned to snow, which sent us boogying back to the warmth of Old Faithful Inn!

However, we did stop at the Continental Divide for an obligatory photo, noticing the DeLacy trail head was in six feet of snow, and again at the Kepler Cascades. John started down the Lone Star trail to see if it was manageable, but was disappointed to find he could hardly maneuver in the foot or more deep snow and slush. (I guess we'll have to come back to Yellowstone to hike this trail!).

Since we were warm by the time we got back to Old Faithful Inn, we decided to grab more hiking gear and head off to the Mystic Falls loop trail (yes, it's STILL raining). Along this quiet trail we see plenty of elk. We continue past some rapids to a wonderful waterfall. Another "spring runoff" waterfall blocks our path, so we retrace our steps rather than complete the loop.

To top off the day, we joined a crowd on the Inn's second floor balcony eating ice cream and waiting for Old Faithful to erupt, when Castle surprises everyone with a huge blast!
