| Although it rained overnight, the day burst forth with a blue sky and brilliant sun. We rose and ate a quick breakfast, loaded up the car and went on our way south and west. We got supplies and information about the Going to the Sun Road in at the Rising Sun visitor's center, and started up the road. Our first stop was an overlook of St. Mary lake with a view of Wild Goose Island. Then on to Sunrift Gorge -- a big cleft in the mountain, with an unusual water channel and rapids. Just a little further, we stopped again to hike the St. Mary Falls/ Virginia Falls trail, and got a bonus view of a waterfall in the distance. St. Mary's Falls is low, but powerful (we saw a "dipper" bird rushing to and fro feeding young in a small cave). About a half mile further down the trail, Virginia Falls is higher with several gentle cascades. We found more peace and solitude there. The trail was pretty but quiet -- and no wildlife to be seen. Just a short drive further up the Going to the Sun Road was a pullout for a distant view of the impressive the Jackson Glacier. Then we were treated to a succession of breathtaking scenes as we climbed up the road to Logan Pass. Each turnout was a prized viewpoint. We were glad to be going east to west, with great scenery and Carol driving on the mountain side of the road, away from the abyss! |
