about the author

Carol Stock Kranowitz has been teaching music, movement, and drama to preschoolers since 1976. Having observed many out-of-sync children, she began to study sensory integration ("SI") theory in order to help identify their needs and to steer them into early intervention. In her workshops and writings, she explains to parents, educators, and other early childhood professionals how SI issues play out -- and provides specific techniques for addressing dysfunction at home and school.

A graduate of Barnard College, Carol has an M.A. in Education & Human Development from The George Washington University. She is on the Professional Advisory Boards of Developmental Delay Resources (DDR) and Nonverbal Learning Disorders Association (NLDA). At St. Columba's Nursery School, in Washington, DC, where she teaches, she is also the coordinator of the "Wise and Wonderful" intergenerational program, which brings together preschoolers and volunteer "school grandparents."

In addition to The Out-of-Sync Child: Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Carol is the author of 101 Activities for Kids in Tight Spaces (St. Martin's Press, 1995). She is the co-author of Hear, See, Play! Music Discovery Activities for Preschoolers (Peg Hoenack's MusicWorks, 1989) and of The Balzer-Martin Preschool Screening Program Manual. She has also written many articles on sensory integration, child development, and preschool curricula for magazines such as Parenting, Sesame Street Magazine, Child Care Information Exchange, and Family Circle.

She and her husband live in Bethesda, Maryland. They have two married sons and a beautiful baby granddaughter.
