SUICIDE POINT
Kureepuzha Sreekumar
Translated by R. Raman Nair

Suicide Point is an English Translation of the selected Malyalam poems of Kureepuzha Sreekumar. Sreekumar's poems reveal the sorrows and disillusion of the youth of the present generation. This selection contains 22 poems including the popular ones like, So is Poetry, Suicide Point, A Soul Song to Edappally, Dark Navigator, Sugarcane Field, the Scooter etc. They constitute a poetic manifestation of the sufferings of his generation, which feels insecurity and uncertainty in these days of cultural degradation and loss of values.

In Sreekumar poetry becomes an experience of its theme, a process, a meditation and so it is in itself a search for solutions. Everything is given concrete form and transmitted to the reader. The diction and style he follows are truly unique.

Among the modernist poets of Malayalam Sreekumar is a major force. In form, style, theme, language and mode of presentation his individuality is apparent. His words and lines are touching in their simplicity. His poems are noted for their richness of emotions and music.

The translator has tried his best to choose the style and rhythm, imagery and symbol most suited for the communication of the life and spirit of Sreekumar's Poems.
