People's Library Movement that evolved in the southern most region of India has no equivalent in any country of the world. It enabled the media to reach the villages; helped the people to fight in an organised way against social economic and political inequalities, trained the people in democratic form of government, and has contributed to the achieving of sen percent literacy in the region. The achievements of this movement influenced the formation of various similar voluntary groups in the region for non-formal education, popularising science and the like. People's library movement was remarkably successful in bringing villagers and common man to participate in complex development issues and in creating political awareness. This book is the first comprehensive evaluation of the people's library movement. The study examines the origins of the movement, its evolution, achievements, failures and lessons that other movements should learn from its experiences. People's library movement of Kerala can enlighten other voluntary movements on how to encourage the common people to become active participants in development.
Peoples Library Movement will be of interest to development activists, administrators interested in participatory development programmes and social workers involved in managing public libraries and community information centres. Scholars from history, sociology, education, and library and information science fields also will find this book very useful.
