IT for Conservation of Cultural Heritage

Centre has under this project in association with CIRD developed using Nitya Archive which is a full text retrieval utility for the organization of records like books, old manuscripts, palm leaf manuscripts, paintings etc and information in digital libraries and CDROM publications. This package interfaces the worlds most powerful search engine developed by Unesco for CDS/ISIS with popular e-publishing solutions.  Searching of the Digital Library through its full text and opening of the required page of a book or leaf of a manuscript in it will be very fast.

Nitya Archive uses high-level text compaction technique and sophisticated free text search and retrieval procedure. Any piece of information contained in any page of any document from the complete collections of Digital archives prepared using this package can be retrieved on the screen within seconds. Searches can be by title, by author, by a keyword or combination of any of them using the Boolean logic. Proximity searches also will be possible.  Most of the solutions for the digital storage of information, lack efficient search mechanism and hence information or records in hard disks and CDROMs remain as dump places of documents, just the same way as documents converted into microform. Nitya Archive can exploit the full potential of digital archiving technology by combining the capabilities of most powerful search engine in the world developed by Unesco to achieve efficient information retrieval and will be highly user-friendly. This can help immensely in conserving our cultural heritage.
