Counterfeits and Fakes of Confederate Stamps

This site features counterfeits and fakes of Confederate stamps. If you are unfamiliar with philatelic terminology, look here.
A detailed page is provided for each counterfeit that points out some of the characteristics that can be used to identify the counterfeit. Since many counterfeits have fake cancels applied, as many characteristics as possible are displayed. Characteristics that can be easily used when looking at computer scans are marked with a red star.

Genuine stamps are shown below as well as on the counterfeit pages for comparison. If you encounter problems with this site, try the main site.

Confederate Stamp Alliance

The Confederate Stamp Alliance is a philatelic organization dedicated to the study of stamps and postal history of the Confederate States. The bimonthly magazine The Confederate Philatelist contains articles written by the most knowledgeable people in the field. The CSA has two social functions each year, a Mid-Year Gathering and a Convention. The CSA also has an Authentication Committee that renders opinions and issues certificates on stamps and covers.

Reviews:

A review of this website appeared in Mike Mills' column "The Glassine Surfer" in the May 2002 American Philatelist. Mike's opinion was that "The site loads quickly and navigation is intuitive. This site would rank high in anyone's usability study, and it had me thinking more than once about the CSA collection I could start." Mike also stated "It's the way this topic was meant to be taught."
