Shuvelan Sanatorium
New windows in the dormitory at the Shuvelan Sanatorium
Shuvelan Sanatorium, 30-40 minutes drive from Baku, is home to around 35 children suffering from respiratory disorders.
In summer, they must accommodate double that amount.
The entire sanatorium has fallen into a state of disrepair, but when we arrived to investigate, we discovered that the
toilet, bathroom, and classroom facilities were the worst.
Thanks to a truly multinational effort, we have been able to embark on a $34,000 renovation and refurbishment programme, during
which (and to save costs) all three facilities were tackled at the same time.

Renovation of classroom facilities was sponsored by the Baku Irish Society, the Holycross and Kyleakin
Football Clubs, and Netherland Trains, making it an Irish, Scottish, and Dutch venture.
Proceeds from the 2005 Anglo Azerbaijani Society Dinner funded a complete overhaul of the toilet and bathrooms
which proved to be in such a bad state that it was more economical to demolish them and start again from scratch, rather than attempt
a repair. The new building now provides excellent facilities adjacent to the dormitories, and also provides outside facilities
for use in summer time.
Caroline Featherstone donated the money raised by a sponsored walk, enabling the windows in the dormitory to be
replaced, and to provide new beds for the children. The new uPVC windows also have fly screens fitted, which will prove invaluable
during the summer.
