Brief History
of the 44th TN.� �
- Organized at Camp
Trousdale just north of Nashville, TN in Sumner County on the TN. KY.
Border.� The first organization was with men from Coffee, Grundy,
Lincoln, Franklin and Bedford Counties in the southern part of Middle
Tennessee.
- Suffered heavy losses
at the Battle of Shiloh and was subsequently consolidated with the 55th
TN. and given the Regimental name 44th Consolidated TN. Infantry.
- The 44th
then fought with the Army of Tennessee in all battles through Chickamauga.
- After Chickamauga,
the regiment was assigned to Longstreet�s Corps and participated in
the Knoxville Campaign.
- The 44th
TN. was moved to Richmond, Va. in April of 1864.� There they found
themselves involved in the Richmond � Petersburg defense.�
- On May 9th,
125 men of the 44th were detached to man the heavy artillery
and defend Fort Clifton, on the Appomattox River close to Petersburg.�
They found themselves engaged with Federal gunboats trying to break
the Richmond � Petersburg defense.
- The 44th�s
final action was manning the trenches in the defense of Petersburg.�
On April 2, 1865, the Regiment�s position was overrun and most were
captured.� Some managed to escape and were forced to surrender
with Lee at Appomattox.
- The writer of this
short history had a 3rd great uncle who mustered in with
the 44th TN. at Camp Trousdale in 1861 and managed to survive
where he surrendered at Appomattox after the siege of Petersburg.�
His name was Thomas Cunnyngham.
