Crystal River Harley Owners Group Chapter Newsletter June 2006 |
||
| From the Director
Hello Harley Owners Group members
I hope everyone is doing well and getting a lot of riding time in. We have some exciting things going on for the month of June and I hope you can join us for some of them. We have the poker run just around the corner. I can still use any volunteers that might be available to help, and if you cant volunteer, maybe you can ride in the event to help support our chapter. We have some great prizes and some nice raffle prizes donated by Wal-Mart in Inverness. For those who were not at the last meeting, we discussed the Christmas party in more depth. We have a couple choices but need to make up our minds fast or we will miss out on both locations. The first choice is Dec. 9th at Bentlys in Dunnellon. The second choice is Dec.23rd at the Citrus Hills Banquet facility. We voted at the meeting and it was about 50/50, slightly in favor of December 9th, so unless some one has another suggestion, we thought Bentlys would be better because it was not so close to Christmas. We will be selling tickets starting in July at the meeting and the cut off date is going to be the November meeting. I have had some interest in the Ladies of Harley so we will have a dinner night for the Ladies of Harley on June 22nd at 6:30 p.m. at Crackers in Crystal River. Anyone is welcome to attend, you do not have to ride your own bike to be a Lady of Harley. If we have enough interest in this we will start putting together some rides and activities for the Ladies of our group. In June, we will have a new type of drawing for the t-shirts and pizzas. If you are wearing a chapter t-shirt, vest, or nametag you will receive a ticket for the drawing. If you have more than one item on you will get more than one ticket. If you have ordered and paid for your nametag, that will count until they come in. Anyone who wants to order nametags can do so by contacting me or coming to the meeting and ordering them there. The price is $8.00 and we have to have at least 12 for an order. I have had a suggestion for a ride and am wondering if anyone would be interested in it. The basics of the ride are just like a poker run but it is for just the chapter members and their guests. The cost would be $5.00 a hand with half the money going to the chapter and the other half going to the winner. The ride would include a lunch stop. The rest of the stops would be either convenience stores or some place for a dessert depending on the ride length. If anyone is interested let me know. Ride safe! Cheryl

From the Assistant Director
Ralph Trowbridge Well, since my last column, I have been doing what I said I needed to do. I have been riding! Riding should be a good excuse for not doing those chores around the house and other things that keep us all from riding, not vice versa.
I just arrived back from one of my scheduled rides. And a long ride it was. On Friday, the day after our monthly meeting, I headed out to the Myrtle Beach Spring Rally, by way of Savannah. Myrtle Beach was great. Its been a couple of years since I last made the trip. The Rally has grown much larger and has changed quite a bit. Unlike Daytona, there is no single concentration of activity. All of the major vendors are there including the Motor Company and
H.O.G. The vendors and activities are spread out up and down Ocean Boulevard as well as US 17. The event extends over 20 miles from Surfside/Murrells Inlet on the south end to North Myrtle Beach on the far north end of the Rally. If you have never been there, you might consider making the trip in the future. Plan a couple of extra days to travel the secondary roads through the Low Country and the Coastal areas of both South Carolina as well as North Carolina. It is a welcome relief from the congestion and confinement of crowds at Daytona Beach. Its never too early to plan a ride. The Myrtle Beach Fall Rally is scheduled for October 4-8, 2006 and next springs Rally is scheduled for May 11-20, 2007. Check out their website for additional details
http://www.myrtlebeachbikeweek.com .
Enough time spent reminiscing, its time to plan another ride. Anybody have any ideas? Give me a call or drop me an e-mail. Better yet, hope to see ya on the road. Ralph

Secretarys Report Deb Driskill
Our May meeting was held at ABC Pizza on May 18th at 7 pm. Cheryl welcomed everyone and introduced guests and new members. Mr. Edwin Lorenzo, Regional Director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters, spoke briefly about the organization and how much they appreciated our efforts. Bernice Hackman thanked those who attended Waynes memorial ride. Welcome and thank you to our newest member, Randy Fitzgerald. Up for renewal are Richard Phillips and Mike Ring. Renewals are being pro-rated to the end of the year, so renewal and new member fees for June will be $11.67. The Chapter presently has 82 members. Cheryl announced a new program starting in June, whereby those members wearing Chapter t-shirts and pins to meetings will be eligible for prizes, and said she is getting together a pin order, which requires a minimum of 12 pins. Joey was given a round of applause for a great job on the newsletter. He said the majority of newsletters in the future will be e-mailed to members rather than mailed, and asked members to submit any photos they would like to see published. Cheryl said plans are being made for this years Christmas Party, and asked for a show of hands for a preference between December 9 and December 23, the only two Saturday dates available. December 9 was chosen, and a reservation will be made at Bentlys in Dunnellon. Ken announced that the first Hide and Seek game was won by Deb Driskill, and a second game is being planned soon. The 50/50 was won by Harley Lawrence, and t-shirts and pizza coupons were won by Randy Fitzgerald and Bernice Hackman. |
Safety Tip of the MonthFrom the Webmaster:
On a group ride, two or more bikes, where should the leader ride? a. The left 1/3 of the lane. b. The center of the lane. c. The right 1/3 of the lane. d. Anywhere they want to. WHY? The group leader should ride in the left 1/3 of the lane if the group is riding in staggered formation. The leader is the only one who doesn't have to worry about the first rule of group riding, don't hit the bike in front of you. The second bike has to worry about not hitting the leader and keeping clear of on coming traffic. Obviously in large groups, several riders will have to ride in the left lane behind other riders, but the risk is much less to them since an errant car will have to go through the group leader to get to them. It's the second bike in a group that is at risk if the leader rides in the right 1/3 of the lane.
This month, following up on James's excellent article below, when should you ride in the right 1/3 of the lane when riding solo? He tells you the answer in his article, or at least why you would do it.

Safety Officer
James Jorgensen Each month, I want to try to cover some of the basics of motorcycles, why we ride, and issues such as safety. All too often we are reminded of the dangers of the road, and riding a motorcycle carries with it a set of challenges that driving an automobile does not. To be safe, one must understand the rules of the road. This month, I want to discuss the concept of positioning and space. Maintaining the proper lane position is a crucial part of an effective street strategy. Maintain a space cushion on all sides of your motorcycle. This helps provide adequate reaction time if evasive maneuvers are necessary. It also helps create an "escape route." In general, when riding alone on a straight road most people prefer to ride in the left third of the lane. It provides you the best line of sight for the road ahead, and makes you most visible to oncoming traffic. However, always be prepared to make adjustments based on road conditions and traffic patterns. |
Member Profile
Ken & Robin Jones
Hi fellow members! Ken is a veteran to motorcycles, having built his first chopper in 1978 with a 1950 pan head engine and a lot of spare parts that he acquired. His first road trip was to Daytona from New York, which if youve ever ridden, is a feat in its own self. My love for motorcycles started to grow about 2 years ago when we purchased a used Honda (good on gas for work). We rode together a few times but Ken wasnt as excited as I thought he would be. He said once you ride a Harley, nothing else compares. I now understand what he meant, and Im hooked, cant ride enough. We have been married for three years, (meeting at the bowling alley of all places), and are enjoying our weekends together. We are actually taking a vacation at the end of June for 10 days, heading North on the bike to Destination Nowhere. See you on the road-Be safe. Robin and Ken Jones |

Hi all fellow HOGS, The first thing I would like to say this month is THANK YOU; to all the volunteers who helped Warren and the club last month at Bike Fest. For those of you who missed it, you missed another great party at the dealership. I also want to say what a great job Joey and Wes are doing with the newsletter. Well now for what is going on this month. First, the meeting place has changed. We will be back at ABC Pizza for the month of May and we will go from there as to what will happen. Most of you requested a return to ABC. As many of you know, Ken gave out the first clue to the Hide and Seek game at the meeting. If you want to know what it is, you will have to bribe a friend who was at the meeting or pay your $2.00 to get the clue. The winner will receive $100 and a free bike rental. We also discussed the poker run. We have a few of the stops worked out but I can use any volunteers who can help and also any donations anyone can get from local businesses for raffle prizes. We are also starting to plan for the Christmas Party. I know it seems so far away but I want to make this one even better than last year. We had a really great time last year and this year I have a few more ideas in mind to make it even better. The more people who get involved the better it will be. Ride safe! Cheryl Director

From the Assistant Director
Retire, Retiring, Retirement: As defined by Webster to withdraw or be removed, as from an occupation, or at the end of the day. It seems that I have not retired from my occupation of thirty-five years. I have only changed the location and hours. I use to have a steady schedule with weekends off. While I was working for a living, I averaged over 10,000 miles a year on my bike. Aside from my Posse Rides, I have not amassed that many miles since retiring over three years ago. If I have retired from anything, it must be from riding my bike. Its been a month since my last article with zero miles to talk about. I must not be the only rider with an erratic schedule. It appears our much sought after Savannah Trip is dying for lack of participation. I am not sure if its lack of participation or lack of prioritizing. I think I know why I am not riding (lack of prioritizing). How about you? Not Riding! Why? We all have excuses. I have to work. Its too hot. Its to cold. It might rain. The bike is too dirty. The bike is too clean (dont want to get it dirty). I am new and really dont know anyone. Its my first bike and I am a little intimidated about riding with others. The list is endless. The bottom line, as fellow HOG members, we must find ways to entice each other to get out and ride. Maybe all that is necessary is to give a member a call and say, Hey, I was thinking about a ride, would you like to go? I personally am going to make an honest effort to get out and ride. I am going to start by working less and riding more. Mays riding plans include a trip to Virginia Beach for the Virginia Beach Bike Classic, on May 5-7 and a trip to Myrtle Beach for Myrtle Beach Bike Week, May 19-21. You are welcome to come along. Or, if you cant make the long rides, give me a call and I will meet you for short, local rides. Enough time spent planning, its time to ride. Hope to see ya on the road. Until then....Ride, Ride Safe, and Have Fun. Ralph

Secretarys Report Deb Driskill Our April meeting was held at Dillons on April 20 at 7 pm. Cheryl welcomed everyone, and introduced guests and new members. She also asked the members of the Chapter to remember Warren and his family in their prayers for the recent loss of his father-in-law.Welcome and thank you to new members Debora DAlto, Jim Pinkston, Robert Hunt, Kimberly Corbin and Terry Corbin. Up for renewal are: Harry Barlow, Kathy Bernquist, Fred Bernquist, Carol Cappuccio, Tom Cappuccio, Joe Carannante, Pamela DeNardis, Lil Gilbert, Gil Gilbert, Glenn Green, Bernice Hackman, Wes Jones, Freddy Kruger, Mike Ring. Renewals are being pro-rated to the end of the year, so renewal and new member fees for May will be $13.33. Joey described the new format for our newsletter, and said the majority will be e-mailed to members rather than mailed. He also plans more articles, and will be featuring a Member of the Month. Cheryl said the Ybor City dinner ride that had been set for May 20 will be rescheduled, and passed out a sign-up sheet for volunteers for our Poker Run on June 3. Ken gave out the first clue for the Hide and Seek game, and reviewed the rules. There was a good turnout at the Bike Fest held at the dealership on April 8 and 9, several new members were signed up, and we had a lot of interest in our Poker Run. Big Al is registered to carry our Chapter flag in the Parade of Flags at the 23rd Annual National HOG Rally, Wild West, in Billings, Montana. The 50/50 was won by Sue Ann Pelham, and t-shirts were won by John Day and Paula Brown. |

Hello fellow HOG members, I would first like to welcome all the new members who have joined over the last few months. We have a lot of new faces showing up on rides and getting involved in activities. It is wonderful to see so many new people. The April meeting should be a good one. We are having guests from Ocala and Ron Wright will be there to talk about the Riders Safety Course. We have a lot of activities going on over the next few months and I am going to need some volunteers to help out. The Citrus Bike Fest is right around the corner Warren is in need of volunteers to help out with parking and other things at the dealership. If you are able to help out, please contact Cheryl at the Harley dealership. I also need some help with the tent that we are setting up at the dealership during Bike Fest. Ken, our activities director, will be set up there on Saturday but I know he can use some help on both Saturday and Sunday to recruit new members and sell t-shirts and patches. Please contact Ken or me if you can help out for a few hours either day. The next activity we have planned is the memorial ride for Wayne Hackman. The ride is going to be on May 7th. We will be leaving out of the dealership at 10:00. The ride is going to be about 100 miles long with a stop for lunch mid way. We are working on a route so more details will follow in the next newsletter or on the website so stay posted. Well the Savannah details are getting finalized and as they come more defiant I will have Harley post them on the website. It looks like we are going to have 2 groups leaving out on Friday; one early in the day and one towards evening for those who work. I will let you know as to times. Ralph is checking on a price for the Days Inn by the airport and if all goes well we will most likely be staying there. The rates are between $ 60 and $70 a night. If we cannot get them to give us a group rate then we will be staying in Richmond Hill where rates are between $45 and $85 a night (there are 2 hotels close by each other that offer different features for the difference in money) the only draw back is it is further to downtown. Ralph said these are great places for the money. I am looking for the best price and a place that will be safe for the bikes to be left over night. We are also gearing up for the annual poker run. I will need volunteers to help with stops and if anyone can get donations for door prizes it would be great. The date is June 3rd and we are working on the rest of the details. We have had a great turn out for the past two meetings, and hope all of you will try to attend the April meeting at Dillons on April 20th. Well hope to see you all out riding. RIDE SAFE! Cheryl |
From the Assistant Director
Florida, Beyond Daytona It seems every spring another friend from up north has purchased their first Harley and feels they must make the trek to Daytona Bike Week. Then I get a call, hey, you going to bike week this year? I have developed a standard reply of, only if its a stop on the way somewhere else. We would all also have to agree to No Interstate, and No Chain Restaurants So on Thursday morning I head out for Flagler Beach to meet a gang of four riders from the north. One was from Georgia, two from Virginia and one from Connecticut. We met at Mannys Restaurant, a favorite place anytime I am in the area. Good food, lots of it, and biker friendly. After a late brunch, it was a short ride down the coast to Daytona. We visited the new dealership, Jackson Hole, Iron Horse, and the old dealership. We did not make it to Main Street. The gang was beat and wanted to head to the hotel. They did not get an argument from me. We spent the first night in Leesburg. The next morning I began to give them a tour of the more traditional Florida. First, and early morning stop at Gator HD, then off to Sugarloaf Mountain, Clermont HD and on to Okeechobee. Wives and Girlfriends met us at the Flamingo Hotel to join us for the rest of the journey. An early morning ride to the rim of Lake Okeechobee for some pictures, then a stop at Pats Restaurant for breakfast before heading around the lake to Pahoke. US 441 was closed from Pahoke, so we detoured via 715. 715 is a much better ride than 441. Perhaps they are actually going to fix the ruts in 441. Anyway, we picked up US 27 in South Bay and headed for Key Largo via 997 and Homestead. (*Note, if you plan a trip to the keys, avoid US 1 from Florida City to Key Largo. They are working on the road and backups are for hours. Spend the extra $1.50 and take the Card Sound Route.) We had lunch in Islamorada and then on to our hotel at the Looe Key Reef Resort around the 28 MM. After relaxing and refreshing, we headed of to the Southern Most Point for photos and the Key West Nightlife. We toured the usual spots, Captain Tonys, Sloppy Joes Hogs Breath and of course, Margaritaville, where we had a late supper then headed back to Looe Key. After breakfast in Marathon we motored on to US 41, Tamiami Trail, via Card Sound. We then headed west to Everglade City. The canal along the way was loaded with alligators. We spent the night at Everglade City Motel. The hotel was very nice, very clean, and you could park you bike at your front door. If you are in the area, I would highly recommend these accommodations. Monday we began our trek to Hernando, but still no interstate. It was a good days ride avoiding Tampa and the interstate but a good one. For five days, we rode through orange groves, Florida Keys, Everglades and rural Florida. They smelled oranges and saw gators and even visited the second highest point in Florida. The ride was excellent, the weather was great and, the camaraderie was even better. Our northern friends were able to sample the traditional Florida beyond Bike Week. I think they will be back for more. Enough time spent reminiscing, its time to plan the next ride. Hope to see ya on the road. Until then..Ride, Ride Safe, and Have Fun Ralph |

Secretarys Report Deb Driskill Our March meeting was held at Dillons on March 16 at 7 pm. Cheryl welcomed everyone, and introduced guests and new members. Beginning April 1, renewals will be pro-rated to the end of the year. Renewal and new member fees for April will be $15.00. Several dates on the calendar were highlighted - May 7 is the Wayne Hackman Memorial Ride, June 3 is our Chapters poker run to benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and May 12 will be the overnight ride to Savannah. Accommodations for the Savannah trip were briefly discussed, and Cheryl asked that anyone interested in going please confirm with her no later than April 15. Ken also mentioned the Rock n Wheels Festival on March 31, as well as a Hide and Seek game hell be starting at the dinner rides, and Sue Ann Pelham suggested a weekend dinner ride to a restaurant called Hungry Harrys in Land O Lakes. The 50/50 was won by Bernice Hackman, and license tag holders or t-shirts were won by Roger Noll, Carol Cappuccio, John Perino, Manny Swikert and Wes Jones. Any Big Spenders Here? From the Webmaster: Unlike Ralph, I like Bike Week as a destination. I can find plenty of things to do and see. For years, I've stayed with a group of older gentleman from Ohio who rented a house half a block off the beach, and within walking distance of Main St, and I've had a ball every year. These guys know the back roads of Daytona Beach like the palm of their hand, and there's really no reason to sit idling in traffic for hours. This year we lost the house that they had been renting for years, and had to take another one across the street. The good news is it's a lot nicer then the old one, four bedrooms, and four baths, the garage will hold 15 bikes, and the rooms are huge, but the bad news is it's more expensive, and this was probably the last year they will stay there. A couple of them have already bought house trailers in the area. The house may be available for next year. It's $5500 for 10 days with a $1000 security deposit. This year, that came out to $55 a night per person. If there's any interest in pursuing renting the house for next year, please contact me. Unlike my buddy from Ohio, I'm not going to finance the thing out of my pocket. It will be a cash up front deal, with a refund only if someone takes your place if you cancel. I think the place will go pretty fast, once the guys from Ohio say they aren't interested anymore, so now's the time to do it if there's any interest in it.

To all fellow members, Well it is March already and bike week is upon us. Warren has a kick off party on the 5th of March; he is looking for volunteers to help out with parking and other areas at this party and also for the bike fest in April if you are interested in helping please contact Cheryl at the dealership. I want to apologize to anyone who missed the meeting last month because they went to Oasis Hotel; the hotel called me at the last minute and told me they double booked. They wanted us to move our meeting to outside by the pool, I declined and we moved to the meeting to Dillons in Crystal River. Ralph waited as long as he could to inform anyone whom I was unable to contact. We have decided to try Dillons for while and see how this goes. The weather has not been very cooperative for some of the rides we have had planned and I plan on rescheduling some of them at later dates. I have been in contact with Capitol City HOGS and they want to ride down here on May 6th I am still working out the details with them but this is what we have so far they will arrive around lunch time and they would like to go somewhere for lunch and then they want to ride about a 50 mile loop around the Nature Coast area, before heading back to Tallahassee. I would appreciate any members who have ideas of a restaurant that can accommodate about 40 people that would show them a good representation of our fine dining here in Citrus County. I am also hoping that I can get some of you to come out and show them some hospitality. I am looking at around the first of June for our ride to Tallahassee so I need some feed back on who would like to make this ride. As some of you know the Savannah trip has been pushed back to May because most of the people who wanted to go could not make it in April. The new dates are May 12th-14th. We are also planning on a group ride to the state rally in Fort Myers we will be leaving the 26th of October and if you are interested in staying at the host hotel it is the Ramada Inn and Suites Riverfront the phone number is 1-800-833-1620. The price is $69 for a double and $79 for a king. I just want to say thank you to Tom and Carol for a great job over the last few years as primary officers. I also want to say Thanks to Deb Driskill for taking over the spot as secretary and Gail Noll for taking over the spot of treasure. We have a few more volunteers for other spots on our officers list and when we have all the details worked out I will let you know who and what position they will be taking. Ride Safe! Cheryl |
From the Assistant Director
What a turnout for our meeting. And how about the unannounced ride from the Oasis to Dillons. All joking aside, we are glad you made the extra effort to get to our meeting. As you can tell by the busy calendar, we have a lot of neat things coming up. Speaking of the calendar, keep in mind it is a flexible work in progress and we are always willing to make changes as necessary. So, if you know of something that we dont have on the calendar, let us know. Space does not allow us to include more than a couple of months in the newsletter, but Harley will try to post three months on the Web site to help with your long range planning. Joey Bennett will be taking over the newsletter next month. Although Joey doesnt have any more spare time than the rest of us, he does have an office staff that can help support him. Please give him a call or drop him an e-mail if you have anything to report. Thanks, Joey. Enough time spent in the office. Its time to ride. Hope to see ya on the road.Until then..Ride, Ride Safe, and Have Fun.

We started some new rides this past month starting with the ABC's of touring
which we will have every month the second Saturday of the month. Even if you aren't
doing the ABC you still can ride with us. We are going to pick a destination each month and ride
there or a couple destinations depending on how the weather is. For the month of February We are also planning a ride to Savannah in April.
My plan is for the weekend of the 22nd. We will leave the dealership Friday afternoon
or early Saturday morning, whichever works best for the group. We will return
Sunday evening sometime. I have been checking out hotel rooms and I need to know exactly
how many are wanting or planning ongoing so I can check on room rates. If anyone
who is interested would let me know by the 1st of March I will get the info on rooms and
get back with you. For any of you who have internet access please check out our website for up to
