第五回 鹹濕仔渡江奪查樂城

Prince Edward Island - Access to Prince Edward Island is as easy as a nine-mile drive since the opening of the bridge across Northumberland Strait. More visitors are finding their way to the Green Gables House in Cavendish and to the historic sights in Charlottetown.

But the new Confederation Bridge -- the only road link between the island and the mainland -- hasn't changed the character of this island-province in northeastern Canada. There are still plenty of quiet side roads leading to secluded beaches or open countryside. Even at the height of the tourism season, the eastern and western ends of the island remain blissfully peaceful. There, locals still look up when a strange car goes past.

在想想可不可以坐船到對岸 PEI, 不過不知道開船時間, 都是算了. 走回到那混漲收費亭, 它收了我錢, 就當它是 德國無速度限制高速公路 Autoban 走走.

走 104 公路 轉入 16, PEI Go Go Go!!!

16 公路是條市郊小路, 慢慢的走, 想起很久之前學過的一首歌, 一邊開車窗一邊唱 "爸爸的草鞋", "走在鄉間的小路上, la la la la loh loh loh ... " (後半句已忘記了), 開車還是聽回 Dr. Bombay 的 S.O.S. "SOS, the tiger took my father, SOS... ya ah lei lo oh eh lei"

終於到了大橋, Confederation Bridge 聯邦大橋, 真的好長, 好像是全世界最長的一條橋, 橋上一架車也沒有, 感覺到橫切風的厲害, 慢慢爬到中央部份, 看得到大島了!

停一停 Info Center, 實在沒有甚麼好買, 看看 Guest Book, 大概都是 "Great!", "Beautiful!". 我前一位卻寫上 "Damn!", 哈哈, 我, 暫時先送她 ":>".

簡單的島, 只有兩條主要公路, 1 號往東到首府 Charlottetown 查樂城; 2 號往西北, 不理甚麼, 直走去 Charlottetown, 沒有甚麼原因, 只是我喜歡 Charlotte 這個名字. (與我現在看的 Sex and the City 裡面的其中女角名字沒關係, 雖然她角式做得也很不錯.)

看看介紹, 原來是用上 Queen Charlotte 來命名的.

PEI 的車牌實在有趣, 也許登記不多, 只有幾個字, 像 XY 123 便可以了, 不用像 Ontario 現在要用到 ACRX 167, B 字頭車牌相信不遠矣. I like simple!!

沿 1 號走, 有路牌寫著 Victoria by the Sea?! 甚麼意思? 吸引我好奇心了... 再走一段發覺原來是在海灣上起了一條公路, 有趣, 或許回程時走走看.

再行經一個叫 Car Life Antique Museum, 有很多古董車放在小屋外, 但快天黑了, 趕快入城找 B&B 再算.

經過山頂, 日落景色好美啊.

在大草地起看到有兩間扁了的屋, 嘩, 好恐佈.

走 North River Road, 看到蚊型大學 University of PEI, 比 College 還要小.

入到城真的太晚了, 明早再觀光.

早起在吃腸仔蛋早餐, 看看本地報紙試試融入一下島民生活. 報紙名叫 The Chronicle - Herald, 除了看看有甚麼 model, 有一段看得我挺心酸的.

一份賣得很貴的報紙, 我盡量看完全份, 政冶經濟漫畫就連訃聞也看, 看到有位年輕女孩的相片, 吸引到我注意, 大概節錄如下:

Wentzell, Chasity Anne - 23, Moncton, NB. ... died Nov 16, 2003, Chasity was born in Lunenburg until shortly before her first liver transplant in 1995, at the age of 15. Following the transplant, Chasity continued to study and eventually graduated from high school in Moncton, and went on to study marketing at NBCC. Chasity's personal platform was of course organ and tissue donation and the importance of further research and education on liver diseases. As a patient in the hospitals in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario, Chasity could often be found sitting with other patients providing comfort and support as they needed it. She never believed that she was too sick to help others and would often tell people to take care of themselves, rather than worry about her.

我馬上想像到一個少女在醫院, 忘記自己痛楚怎樣親切彎腰對待其他病人, 當時的笑容, 作為一個過客的我在此向你 Salute! 也會到 Moncton 走走看這少女的出生地.

在 downtown 走走, 啊?! 有日本妹啊?!

走進 City Hall 看看介紹, Queen Charlotte 是當年 King George III 的妻子.

St. Dunstan's 教堂, 1898 年建成, 在 1913 年發生大火薰黑了外牆.

Trinity Church, 更古老, 1863 年.

St. Paul, 這一座最好看.

 

停好車, 發現沒有零錢入錶, 入小店買包薯片找錢, 嘩! 一出來已經有人抄牌了, 好在我說一聲他就幫我 cancel 了. :>

Confederation Art Center, 我這個文藝青年當然要看看, 最緊要是不用錢.

 

參觀 PEI Court House, 有位靚姑做導遊, 我不用了, 喜歡到處走走的. 到處也有穿整齊制服的老兵在站崗, 不敢亂來, 匆匆拍照便算了.

 

開車回去了, 經過 UPEI, 有女大學生穿著背心跑步啊!

回到 Hwy 1, 風和日麗, 微暖, 慢駛.

回到那間爛屋, 想想應該是 2003 Sept 28 的世紀颶風 Juan 做成的, 之後看回資料原來 Halifax 當時嚴重得多, 海邊的屋都被吹爛.

馬在吃草, 牛就很過癮坐在地上看經過的車.

看到一架用普通私家車做成的郵車, 只是車頂放一個牌, 有趣, 一共有兩人坐車, 一人開車, 另一人在車內伸手出車放入在路邊的郵箱, 方便到極啊.

小島很快走完了, 出發到下一站, 到那位少女出生地 Moncton 去看看. 正是 :"天災人禍擋不過, 難阻關懷少女心." 欲知後事如何, 請看下文分解.
