What do you get when you combine crazy snowflakes, Christmas Eve slumber parties, a life-size Shirley Temple doll and tap dancing sailors? Chicago’s newest unconventional and unorthodox version of the beloved Nutcracker, Cracker Jack! Crunch! Productions, a youth tap ensemble in their first season, is joined by six guest artists and their artistic director as they give their unique interpretation of the traditional ballet. Trading pink satin pointe shoes for heavy black tap shoes, the dancers mix up the story, though the plot remains somewhat intact. When the “Grand Pas de Deux” is sweetly danced by Clara (Brittany Thompson, Arlington Heights) and Cracker Jack (Patrick Kendall, Milwaukee) to Sinatra’s “Come Fly with Me”, you realize the spirit of the entire show is light-hearted and fun. There couldn’t be a more enjoyable family affair for the holidays. Dancers in Crunch! range in age from 11 to 18 years old, and they hail from Libertyville, Arlington Heights, Prospect Heights, and Mount Prospect. In their first year, they have already hosted a successful tap workshop with Chicago’s finest instructors and choreographers, and they have made their debut performance at the Willowbrook Ballroom “End-of-Summer Swing Out”.
