Famous
for one of the worlds best know landmarks The Golden Gate Bridge. Built in 1937
it is one of the world's longest suspension bridges.
From the bridge Alcatraz Island can be seen which once housed some of Americas most notorious criminals, including the likes of Al Capone and Robert Stroud known as "The Birdman of Alcatraz".
Over the years several attempts have been made by the prisoners to escape, all of them apparently unsuccessful. Some of the escapees were re-captured, some shot, and some simply disappeared forever in the dark waters of the bay.
Another favourite haunt of the tourist is Fishermans Wharf which is bustling with fishing boats, seafood stalls, souvenir shops and museums.
For those who enjoy shopping, San Francisco is a shoppers paradise. Apart from the street stalls along the waterfront there are shopping Malls, department stores and trendy boutiques. All the well known American retail names are here catering to every taste and budget.
A "Port of Call" one day visit is not really enough to see all the sights of this famous city.
