An Unusual Jug
MEETING REPORT
President Sheila
McMurray welcomed Lynn Conroy - past chairman of the Home and
Garden committee, to chair the A.G.M. along with Patricia McBurney
and Heather Whitehead acting as tellers. After reports were read
and business completed, the entertainment took the form of a quiz
relating to the last 50 years of Crossgar W.I programmes.
Presentation of Awards: Joan Shanks Salver - Rhona Niblock, Purdy
Cup - Jenny Young, Competition Cup - Lorna Stevenson. The
competition winner for the most unusual jug was Mabel Baird. The
birthday girls for June, July, August and September were Eunice
Murdock, Susan Jackson, Ann Bell and Olga Cairns.
The newly elected President, Jenny Young, was congratulated and
offered best wishes for her term in office.
The evening ended with the singing of ‘A Countrywoman’s Song’.

Competition:
A Recipe from Abroad
MEETING REPORT
The Vice President
Mary McMurray chaired the May meeting and welcomed everyone.
Congratulations were extended to Nora Lennon on being elected as
the Executive Committee member for the Quoile Area.
Arrangements were finalised for Balmoral Show, the summer
outing, and forthcoming dance. Three of our own members took us
round the world on their travel experiences. Eileen Smyth spoke
about her cruise visiting the Baltic Capitals, Edith Ringland
gave a PowerPoint presentation of her visit to Romania and
France and Nora Lennon took us further to New Zealand, Australia
and Hawaii. Each related their own memorable memories of each
country visited.
The competition winners for 'A recipe from abroad' were Eithne
Douglas, Doris Lennon and Georgie Simpson. The birthday girl was
Florrie Maude and the ballot winner was Jean Robinson.
The evening ended with the usual singing of 'A Countrywoman's
Song’.

Reduce/Reuse/Recycle (Members Table)
Competition:
A Recycling Idea
MEETING REPORT
Reduce ,Reuse and
Recycle was the theme for the April meeting. The President
Sheila McMurray welcomed members and introduced the speaker
Janet McIveen from Down District Council Waste and Recycling
Services. Janet gave a very informative talk with the aid of
slides explaining the different methods of waste recycling and
disposal serving the 29,000 households in Down District. We were
reminded and made aware of what we should, and should not put
into the black, blue and brown bins. We must reduce our waste by
40% by next year, at present we have achieved between 34% - 37%.
The entertainment took the form of a members table. This always
proves to be good fun , and the end result beneficial to funds.
Competition winners for 'A recycling idea' were 1st Georgie
Simpson, 2nd. Olga Cairns, and 3rd. Lorna Stevenson. The
birthday girl was Ann Patterson and the ballot winner was Ann
Mateer.
The evening concluded with the singing of 'A
Countrywoman's Song'.

A Holiday Souvenir
MEETING REPORT
At the March meeting
President Sheila McMurray welcomed members and introduced and
welcomed Noel Beattie the guest speaker for the evening. Noel gave
a very interesting slide show and informative commentary as he
took us round the world on his many exciting holiday travels. A
vote of thanks was proposed by Nora Lennon
The President congratulated all who had participated in the Area
competitions , the quiz team for coming third and Irene Deboys
coming second in the good handwriting competition, and Lorna
Stevenson bowls.
The competition winners for 'A holiday souvenir' were Nell Rourke
,Nora Lennon, and Rhona Niblock. The birthday girl was Jean
Parkinson and the ballot winner was Margaret Clements.
A very enjoyable evening concluded with the singing of 'A
Countrywoman's Song'.

Competition:
A Hair Ornament
MEETING REPORT
President Sheila
McMurray welcomed everyone to the February meeting on such a cold
night. Sheila then introduced the speaker for the evening being
our local beautician Zara McClements of Zara,s Beauty Studio
Zara demonstrated the many products she had on display and
highlighted the many other treatments available. As she gave a
manicure to member Lorna Stevenson, Zara explained how to improve
and condition the hands and nails. Zara also provided a gift
voucher which was won by our President, Sheila.
The entertainment, which got our brains working, was provided by
Edith Ringland and Rhona Niblock.
The birthday girl was Heather Lennon. The competition "A hair
ornament” was won by Ann Bell, Lorna Stevenson, Georgie Simpson
and Eithne Douglas. The ballot winner was Jenny Young
A very enjoyable evening concluded with the singing of ‘A
Countrywomen’s Song’.

Use Your Local Pharmacist
Competition:
Your Favourite Cure
MEETING REPORT
The speaker at the
January meeting was our local pharmacist Philip Boyle. Philip gave
a very comprehensive talk and PowerPoint presentation explaining
the history of pharmacy to the wide ranging services provided and
available to all. Assisted by his wife Andrea, Philip
then presented everyone with a very generous "goodie bag" which
was greatly appreciated by all the members.
After supper, we continued with the "Area Quiz " to find our
successful team to go forward to the next round . The winners were
Olga Cairns, Deirdre Kennedy and Ann Patterson, Reserve Jenny
Young.
Competition winners for "your favourite cure" were Georgina
Simpson, Florrie Maude and Sheila McKee. The birthday girl
was Mable Baird and the ballot winner was Olga Cairns.
A wonderful evening closed with the singing of A Countrywoman's
Song

My Christmas Wish
MEETING REPORT
After welcoming everyone to the December meeting the President,
Sheila McMurray, asked everyone to observe a minutes silence in
memory of Martha Ringland. Martha was a valued honorary
member who had celebrated her 90th birthday this year. A
very faithful member of Crossgar WI Martha will be sadly missed..
Mulled wine was served to everyone during the evening activity of
"New Age Kurling ". This was a new game to most of us,
but great fun to play and enjoyed by all who participated.
The Festive supper provided by the committee was followed by the
singing of Christmas Carols - A fitting end to a most enjoyable
evening.
The Competition winner of "My Christmas Wish " was 1st Sheila
McKee, 2nd Florrie Maude, 3rd Lorna Stevenson. The birthday
girl was Margaret Clements and the ballot winner was Doris Lennon.
A very successful evening was concluded with the singing of the
Countrywomen’s Song.

Crafty Christmas
Competition:
Christmas Candle
MEETING REPORT
At the November meeting the President Sheila McMurray said the
11th November 2008 was a very poignant date set aside to remember
the dead. But in death comes glory and life must go on that is why
it is necessary to look after our health and our friends. The
President also reminded us that 56 years ago Crossgar Memorial
Hall was opened on the 11th November 1952. Sheila thanked two of
our Institute members, Katie Williams and Edith Ringland, for
serving on the Hall Committee and wished them continued success.
The theme for the evening was 'Crafty Christmas. The speaker was
Heather Newell and she soon had us all cutting, gluing and pasting
with everyone being delighted with the end result of a beautiful
decorated candle. Heather then ably demonstrated how to make a
wide variety of Christmas novelties.
Nora Lennon gave a report on the Autumn Council meeting and also
told us about the sponsored 7 mile walk she completed in aid of
A.C.W.W. Mary McMurray also gave a report on the Area meeting.
Competition winners were Lorna Stevenson, Florrie Maude and
Gillian Foster. The birthday girl was Liz Cleland and the ballot
was won by Nora Lennon.
A very enjoyable evening concluded with the singing of 'A
Countrywomen’s Song.

Art of Ikebana
Competition:
Spray of Autumn Berries
MEETING REPORT
The President Sheila McMurray welcomed a good turnout of
members to the October meeting. She congratulated and
thanked everyone who contributed in making the 60th Anniversary
Service of thanksgiving such a success.
The speaker this month was Janet Kirk who ably demonstrated the
art of Ikebana. Janet took up the art of Japanese flower arranging
eight years ago and has visited Japan to further this interest.
After tea John McMurray gave a very professional presentation of
photographs which he had taken at the anniversary service held in
Kilmore Presbyterian Church.
The competition winners were Nora Lennon, Lorna Stevenson, and
Sheila McKee
The ballot was won by a visitor - Colette Hamill ,- and the
birthday girl was May Norwood.
A very enjoyable evening closed with the singing of A Country
Woman's Song.

MEETING
REPORT
Crossgar institute
held its annual general meeting on Monday 8th September, conducted
by Joan Shanks. Sheila McMurray was duly elected as President.
Outgoing President Olga Cairns - and all present at the meeting -
offered the new President their congratulations. Tribute was also
paid to her service as institute and 60th celebration secretary,
in the 2007/08 year
After a welcome tea-break, the evening’s business continued with
presentations and awards. The Joan Shanks Salver was presented to
Rhona Niblock and Lily Gabby. The Purdy cup was won by Deirdre
Kennedy, and the Competition cup by Lorna Stevenson.
Birthday gifts for the months June, July, August and September
were won by Martha Ringland, Sheila McKee, Ann Bell and Gillian
Foster. Martha Ringland had celebrated her 90th birthday in July
and she again received the congratulations of her fellow members.
The competition for the prettiest cup was won by - Doris Lennon
first, Lily Gabby second and Rhona Niblock third. Mary McMurray
won the ballot.
