                             A LAMINATED SMILE

The big birthday....A new driver's license with a fantastic photo
Laughing..I show it to everyone
amazed that this came from a two second snap of a camera.

Stern faced lady at the DMV
You will never know what that meant to me.
I am glad it is laminated....for eternity.

Days later...

I take out my license to cash a check
and the clerk studies my face
"It's called Bells Palsy" I reply though she hasn't said a word.

My face is frozen like the ice-cream in my cart
I am trying to connect through my good eye
A tear trickles down my cheek
from the one I can't blink.

Stonefaced..she hands me my receipt
and sends me on my way.

MIRROR, MIRROR

Mirror, mirror, on the wall
That isn't like my face at all!

It's some cheap trick, a strange new blip
I know my face, that's not my lip.

It drools, it droops, my cheek is tight
My nose won't wrinkle, that's not right!

Mirror, mirror, when I blink
It looks more like a flirty wink.

And why the tears? And why the ache?
Sometimes it's just too much to take.

I don't sleep well, I've got so fat.
How do I deal with all of that?

But mirror, mirror, what you see
Is just the superficial me.

The person that I am inside
Would smile, would laugh and wouldn't hide.

I will be strong, I'll pass this test.
Oh yes - and most of all - I'll rest!
