The 100Th. birthday of Walt Disney was celebrated Wednesday December 5th 2001 at the Disney MGM theme park with a 25-foot-high image of Walt Disney made entirely of cakes. I was there with my family in the mists of all this merriment thinking how little to no Davy Crockett merchandise I could find in any of the Disney World theme parks, when all of a sudden Fess Parker walked by. There was Fess all spiffed up in a dark suit and sporting a moustache, we called to him and he shook each of our hands and talked with us before he had to move on to his appearance in the celebration. Well, all I could think then was I couldnt have asked for more then finding Davy Crockett himself in the park! Thanks Fess!

Talking about Davys hat, the Davy Crockett Craze made a splash on the "Style Page" of the December issue of GQ Magazine. The article by John T. Edge, "Frontier Foppery, Make like Davy Crockett and get some tail -- Pioneer -- Style" touches on many of the highlights of the DC Craze, using Davy's hat as the hook and Disneys Davy as the hero to look up to after 9-11. An interesting piece that leaves you thinking that maybe ol Davy could wrestle a terrorist into seeing the error of their ways!!

DISNEY MAGICAL MUSICAL MOMENTS PINS: The Ballad of Davy Crockett Pin # 40
![]() |
Here we go again Disney has come out with yet another 100+ pins set. This year's offering is called the Magical Musical Moments pin series and is destined to be one of the more memorable pin series released by Disney to date. All pins feature hit songs and ballads from each of your favorite Disney movies with eight new pins released every Saturday through the end of 2002. One of the eight pins issued each week will actually play the musical tune based on its Disney movie theme. These new colorful pins (measure about 1.5"w x 1.5"h) are packaged on a sealed card and sold exclusively at the Disney Store for $4.50 US and $7.50 CDN. The Ballad of Davy Crockett is pin # 40 in the set and is one of the ones that do not play music. This cool looking Davy pin harkens back to the days of the 1955 craze by showing a silver and brown felt silhouette of the buckskinned Alamo hero in front of a large round yellow sun that's set behind a Tennessee mountaintop filled with black felt pine trees! It could only be better if it did actually play "Born on a mountaintop in Tennessee, Greenest state in the land of the free, Raised in the woods so he knew every tree, Kilt him a b'ar when he was only three, Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the wild frontier!"
