Spring Crew
The Spring Season is open to new and experienced rowers.

The Spring meeting happens in February with optional pre-season workouts beginning during break week.  Official practices begin for everyone the 3rd Monday in March.  There is a parent meeting at the end of this week.

Racing
Because of the logistics involved with moving the equipment, regattas are generally held on weekends and can last an entire day.  This requires a genuine commitment from the student and the family.
Check the
team calendar for a complete schedule.

Racing for the upper boats begins the first weekend in April with the Cambridge Mayor's Cup race against Buckingham, Browne & Nichols.  Held on the Charles River, this is our traditional season opener.

Spring Break
We practice twice a day during Spring Break.  New rowers begin racing at the end of this week.

Championship Regattas
The racing season culminates the last weekend in May at the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships and the
Massachusetts Public School Rowing Association Championships.

The girls team season ends with the Latin Challenge against the Boston Latin School.  Competing in 8's, we race over a 2 1/2 mile course for the Latin Challenge trophy.

At the end of the season BBQ (held at the boathouse), family and friends are invited to go for a row with their team members.

The CRLS Crew is a Club in the Fall and a Varsity sport in the Spring.
We are open to boys and girls at CRLS.

Program Goals
1) The development of the basic skills, appropriate attitudes, values, and team concepts necessary for competition.
2) To allow as many students as possible to participate and share the experience and benefits derived from team membership.
3) To compete successfully

Choosing a Crew
Crews are chosen based on ability, attendance and attitude with consideration to the league event we are competing in.

Massachusetts Public School Rowing Associataion
www.mpsra.org
The mpsra is open to any public school in the State of Massachusetts.  For these regattas, rowers are seperated by skill level.
Novice - a freshman or anyone in their first year of rowing.
Varsity - all others.

New England Interscholastic Rowing Association
www.neiraregattahome.com
Open to public and private single school programs in New England.  Crews must compete against 3 other NEIRA programs during the regular season.  Based on results from these races, the top 18 1st boats and the top 12 2nd, 3rd and 4th boats qualify for the championships.
There are no skill seperations. The rowers are boated from the 1st boat down based on skill regardless of age or experience.

Crews finishing 1st or 2nd in the 1st boat events at the championship qualify to attend the US Rowing National Youth Championships in Ohio.

Support
In addition to the funding we receive from the City, we are supported by the Association for the Support of Cambridge Crew (ASCC).  A parent run group that raises money and provides logistical support for the team at races.

Fall Crew Club and Learn to Row
The Fall season is open to new and experienced rowers.
You DO NOT have to row in the Fall to join the team in the Spring!
Practices for returning rowers begin the last week of August and race 3 or 4 times in the Fall.

There is a meeting for new rowers the first week of school.  Practices begin the following Monday and are held every day after school for several hours.
New rowers will be taught the basics of the stroke and will spend time working out and rowing with experienced members of the team.
New rowers generally have 1 or 2 races.

There is a parent meeting at the boathouse the second weekend in September where they can learn more about the sport.

Head of the Charles Regatta
Every year, the team volunteers for the
Head of the Charles Regatta. We help with set-up, sales and serving the athletes' pasta dinner.  It's a lot of fun.  Additionally, experienced rowers get a chance to compete in the prestigous event.

MPSRA Regatta
At the end of October, the team competes in the
Massachusetts Public School Rowing Association Fall Championships. Held on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, we try to put everyone into the competion.

The end of season Potluck Dinner is the first weekend in November.

The rowing doesn't stop.  Students continue to row until Thanksgiving.  Practices are casual with an emphasis on sculling.

Thanksgiving Alumni Row!
The day after Thanksgiving, CRLS Crew alums return to the boathouse for a chance to catch up and go rowing again.  Current team members are required to attend the event to help with set up and tear down.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is the end of the Fall season.  The team is required to come down to the boathouse, clean and disassemble the equipment, and put it into winter storage.  This is a crucial step in keeping our equipment in racing condition and ready for the Spring Season.
